I save all my coat-out work for the end of the day...it reassures me of a resonably dust free environment as the materials dry over nite.
Plus I don't have the hassle of working around wet paint all day.How many of you do the same?
Sometimes I think I just do it have that beautiful smell greet me in the mornings...(god I love that)...reminds me of my youth when every shop smelled of mingling aromas of lard oil mineral spirits...linseed oil and enamels.
Haul me away E.P.A. I'll take those smells any day over the smells of the obnoxious newer safer paints they want us to die from these days.

And just think Monte, some folks only smell the stale odors of vinyls when they cruise the shop in the morning. The days when one exciting billboard after another just kept flowing without end. So we thought.
That mockingbird just don't fly no more.....
Makes a lotta noise, outside my door.

Nothing beats turp and One Shot, but have to admit the smell of the new lacquer thinner I use is not bad either!
The down side is that nobody visits me 'cause they always leave with an headache!
Yesterday was the best when I had to remove that formica panel glued with contact cement on my screen printing table. Cleaned all the glue with lacquer thinner, better than booze!!
Life is so good!

Granted I don't use much paint here but when I'm making fiberglass molds or making fiberglass parts from molds, I spray up the gelcoat at night so it's ready for fiberglass layup the next morning.
Gelcoat has a pretty sweet aroma too.

I sure do miss the smells of a real sign shop - paints, inks, thinners, wood, etc. It reminds me that work is getting done. When I did a lot of painting, I too would wait until the end of the day. I always looked forward to it because it was the relaxing part of the day where I could wind-down and go home.

I do love the smell of fresh paint, but I sure don't miss the intense headaches I got every single day. But I do understand what you're talking about.

Every time I coat out stuff at night I get skeeters in the paint. (that's in summer...in winter I paint 'em on the dining room table because I can't afford to heat the garage. Inevitably I get Weezer hairs!) I always do like the smell of paint tho, and turpentine. Love....Jill

I always do any coating out at the end of day; likewise screenprinting. As much as I love the smell of paint, it can sometimes get a little overpowering - especially coro ink.

I love the smell of a tattoo shop almost as much as fresh paint and thinner.

Be careful what you breath around a sign shop, it may come back to haunt you! Been there, done that! It does have a nice aroma in the morning sometimes.

people who come to where I work always remark on the sweet aroma that fills the air as I stand there with a brush in my hand and pinned eyes, the paint room is a different story

I always coat at the end of the day. No dust being kicked up, killing the lights draws the bugs outside, a small fan to keep the air moving and they are usually ready to go in the AM.
Watching paint dry never seemed like much of a spectator sport to me anyway.

Yes!!! I LOVE the smell of paint, & I say it often! Did you ever notice how the colors smell different, too? Last night's One Shot green didn't smell too good, but the white,,, now that smells really good!
I always liked the smell of gasoline, & even some exhaust fumes when I was little. The exhaust fumes don't smell the same as back then.
Kelsey, I bet that is the green soap smell you like! I like that smell too!
Good post Monte!

I guess I like laquer smell the best we used to spray out metal backers with it. Magic Markers comes in second, but I read recently that the two guys who invented them at 3M, ended up with brain damage from the fumes in the lab and lived there last years in wheelchairs.
I got a problem when coating out panels in the evening, the next morning there is usually a set of cat tracks across them in the morning.
I wouldn't mind the tracks once in a while but the cat has been slacking off. This weekend I was blasting some signs when the blaster became plugged, opened up the hose and there was a tiny bone in it. Took the bottom off and the strainer out and there were 5 mouse skeletons in the tank all preserved and dried out from the sand. They must fall in the top and can't get out.

Turpentine costs more, but it's aroma therapy.
Ditto what Pierre said, except I think it should be more like:
"the Yesterday best was when had I to remove formica that panel glued contact with cement on screen my printing table. Cleaned the all glue lacquer with thinner, booze!! than better
Completely legal too. You ever hand at look? mean, I look really? far Wow out man.

Okay, you guys are nuts. And sanding blasting with mouse parts? that takes the cake. I'm calling Greenpeace, the EPA, Al Gore, Democrats and Al Sharpeton. I'd do it now, but I have to clean out my brushes with paint thinner, (Long day at the body shop)

None of your Trucks ... I drive a van full of paint and thinners everyday! My favourite smell travels with me.
Yeah, I try and coat out last thing ... get a good start to the next day. Otherwise it's first thing in the mornings and even most enamel colours are dry enough in this heat and lack of humidity to work on after lunch.
Laquor thinners and ink is another story! "Sweet" smell (Sucess?) ... we do a lot of tents and banners with it. Vicki always uses a mask but I find just a cross ventilation is enough. Masks get hot and sweaty. As for "highs" or headaches ... never had a problem. All I find is it kills the appetite and makes the cigs taste funny !!!! hahahhahahaha

Been living with all those good smells for years, but now there is the ugly smell of ink from the digital printers, fooey.
