After a last-minute fiasco with some clear-coating issues, solved with a suggestion by our "paint angel" Tramp Warner, we finally unveiled the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Mural Saturday in Suwanee. Although it will now be mounted on the arched wall on the other side of the stage, we decided it would be best to display it onstage for the dedication. Some of the artists who helped were in attendance: Nancie Phillips, B-Bob Bretschneider, Curt Wilson, and David & Vanessa Morgan.
The mayor introduced us and then made a big mistake by giving me the microphone. (I told the crowd what a swell bunch the Letterheads are)
The curtain's ready to fall (I was too exhausted to be nervous)
and voila
This is Robert Lee Smith, one of the original members of the Tams and still singin' and dancing. I wish I'd had this picture when I painted him into the mural. This was his 71st birthday.
This is Billy Joe Royal, who also performed, pointing to his mug. If you don't remember him, he had a big hit called "Down in the Boondocks" back in the 60's. I was surprised to see so many (older)lady fans who were more than ready to take him to the love shack.......
All in all, it was a lot of fun and I managed to squeeze in a few faces in the background including my family, Aussie John, Terry Colley, B-Bob, my daughter's boyfriend, and the ladies on the development committee (they were thrilled)

You guys did a fantastic job!!!. I was impressed right from Rapid Ray starting to lay it out, to all those that chipped in at the Dixie Meet, to the finished piece. I'm going to have to see it again now that it's done.

During the introduction, we also noted our "kickstarter", Rapid Ray, who was supposed to be there but made a hasty retreat from GA after an unfortunate situation last week. Bill Diaz and Terry Colley were also mentioned for their assistance. One-Shot got a free plug as well. If there's anybody else who put some paint on this thing, please let me know so we can can include you in the acknowledgements.....

Excellent job Sonny! heh yeah we had Billy out here to Ball Ground to perform at our spring festival a few years back and it was quite the soap opera after the gig with the ladies that were trying to talk their way onto the bus. And believe me they were more than talk. Never saw anything like it.

Terry- Don't let him kid you...he did a fine job on your likeness. I knew it was you right off! I think it was neat witnessing Sonny's discovery that he could paint faces. Sonny-I think it's time for you to try putting one on canvas!

What a great job Sonny! I know Rapid and Nancy worked their tails off on that project as did many others. So is that going down to the Ga Music Hall of Fame in Macon? I saw the Tams in concert several times and Billy Joe Royal (he is from Valdosta - me too). Edited to read: I just read your post Sonny; that ought to make the town proud!
