I'm sure no one notices that I've been missing in action for the past few weeks. But, I just wanted to share a site that I've been working on that has taken a LOT of my time.
A little history here: The Borough of Gettysburg Sign Ordinance is horrible. I attempted to work with the Borough to modify it. From day one they fought me, I became public enemy number one with the Council. 2 years later and I have finally gotten a lawyer involved.
But here's the fun part. As a result of being screwed with by the Borough, I have become rather active.
Check out the site below. It may be obvious, but my name is Venter. The site has literally exploded in 5 weeks. It is not for anyone who is offended by cursing. Be warned, my language gets rather harsh when talking about the Borough. To get to our Forum, go to www.boroughvent.com and click on the screaming man!
Thanks, Gene

Gene, that's interesting. There's an old issue of SC magazine where the locals got Bob Parsons involved in a campaign. If I recall, funding was low, they were by far the underdogs, but Parsons had some ideas and'killer' cartoons that made a huge imapct. Very inspiring.
And that was before the internet was as prolific as it is now. Blogs are making enough difference now that politicians cannot ignore them.
So-o-o-o-o, what if one combined the two? (internet + ideas & cartoons) The cartoons he drew didn't caricaturize individuals, they dealt with issues. You really need to find that back issue. Again, very inspiring . I've got a stack of the mags setting here, about 15 inches from my feet. Maybe I'll look through them myself...

quote:Slander and libel are always issues to keep in mind, so try to temper your statements.
hmmmm.... Slander is SPOKEN, libel is WRITTEN, thus you can drop SLANDER from the sentence. Nobody TALKS on the chat boards, one less problem to worry about
I salute you for taking a stand and fighting for what you believe to be what's best for your town!
As an aside, our town instituted zoning here about 7 years ago. I was asked to serve on the first zoning board...
We spent about 6 months doing the sign regs with the national code in hand. Each session was attended by the owner of the "real" sign shop in town He produces all kinds of commercial sinage. Except for some technicalities in wording, the regs remain unchanged. It's amazing what can be accomplished when folks work together.
Good luck with efforts!!!

Hey Serge, I know the difference, but a lot of people don't. It is better to use a word they are familiar with along with one they may not quite understand. It only uses a few bits of info.
Joe, If you have a copy of the Ordinance you can email, it would be appreciated. As a matter of fact, if anyone has a good Ordinance let me know. Better to use good a Ordinance to prevent having to use good Ordnance

"Slander is SPOKEN, libel is WRITTEN" -------------- That's true, in US law. Further, Truth is a defense against a charge of Libel, and Libel can apply only to a living person.
Truth vs Libel was established in the early 1700s when New York was a British colony. John Peter Zenger published an editorial calling the royal tax collector a thief, and was sued for Libel. In fact, the Royal Governor told the Royal Judge to find Zenger guilty. But a Jury of working-class grunts found that the tax collector was indeed a thief, and thereby told the Judge, the Governor and His Majesty to shove it and go look for it.
In 1966 Paul Krassner published a pornographic parody of Disney cartoon characters. Thinking they already owned the world, Disney dispensed with copyright law and pronography, and charged Krassner with Libel. The court found that cartoon characters are neither living nor persons, and therefore have nothing to do with Libel. So Krassner won, and he admitted "Some of my best friends don't exist."

I went to the Sign Craft Magazine website, Website of a GREAT magazine and did a few searches to find the article, but must not have used the right words. One email though, and I got a reply back from John, he was right on the first guess.
Anyway, it's issue 83, July/August of 1995, page 31. It was a campaign for the mayor's office. It sounds as though they did surprisingly well, but didn't actually win. However, because of how well they did, Bob Parsons was asked to do the same work for a state senate campaign, which they won, against a 32 year incumbant. They are more details that describe how big of a victory it was, but I'm not sure whether I can quote the article.
One thing that helped was that they used fax messages, which hadn't been done before. The media was very interested in this new use of technology, and they received publicity because of it. The fax messages had Parsons' cartoons on them.
Nowadays, one can establish a Yahoo group easily. Everytime a member posts, it goes to all other members. So this could be employed instead of faxes. You might ask members or visitors to the website for ideas about cartoons. That way you'd have a bigger pool of ideas, and people would feel a sense of involvement: (I can't draw a straight line/stick figure, but they used my idea for a cartoon) Hey neighbor, did you see this cartoon here? No? Well it's about the XYZ campaign, and guess what? It's my idea! See, what the issue is about, so and so is trying...
I'm letting my imagination run here. but I suppose it's not too far fetched.

You have a good memory man! BTW, I'm still doing the political campaigns with humor. Go to YouTube and search Kohring. My son and i did an animated TV ad. (260 drawings)...
Also, I did the radio and newspaper stuff. All right on the good 'ol Mac. Didn't have to leave the best coffee in town, nor some of the finest playing guitars around!
