The local hockey association is interested in several championship banners to hang in the arena. They want a classier look than the regular scrim vinyl banners. They want a yellow background with black copy, pole pockets top and bottom. Fellers used to carry a material called Imperial or something like that. It was more of a fabric that was supposed to be vinyl receptive, I think. Has anyone ever used it? Does anyone have any suggestions for a classy looking banner material suitable for this application that would be vinyl receptive?

Hiya Patrick, If they really want classy, I would recommend contacting a wholesale flag manufacturer like Elder Flag or someone similar. The add your mark-up and sell it to the client. Does fellers still sell nylon banners? I didn't see it in their latest catalog. Anyway, if you're sold on the nylon look or similar, it can be tricky to work with. From my experience, intermediate vinyl doesn't stick well to it. My first time using it resulted in the letters curling up and falling off within a week. So, I would only recommend a high quality cast vinyl and using heat and a rivet brush to push the vinyl into the material. I never had a failure with this method, using 3M(Gerber or Gregory too) or Arlon's HP cast materials. Another thing to be careful of is it doesn't clean very well. Even if you use stabilos or similar and mark layout lines on the banner, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to get those marks off. Finally, be careful if you're rolling and storing them for a couple of days. If they're double sided banners, the vinyl can tunnel if you roll them too tight. So I wouldn't roll them any tighter than 10".
Havin' fun,
