I guess it was about 13 or 14 years ago, I was at a small sign company in Hattiesburg, and we had someone go out and measure a sign for a replacement face, and they mismeasured. (The employee was on the way out, so he didn't care.) The face was 11" too short, so I had to cut 5 1/2 inches out of each side of the support pole. I worked a 17 hour day working outside, and welding in the dark caused me to burn my eyes even though I was using a helment. That was the worst I have ever been burnt, and by far the most painful.

UH, David...not sure what you're saying there... HowEver, I will testify as this much, as far as welding goes...
It's easy to get burnt. Even when you think you're protected... sort of like Life...it'll sting you once in ahile, but that doesn't make it all that bad...
It all boils down to what you believe in.

It's amazing how many arc welding horror stories can occur. Like when you're squatting down to get that last low spot, and a hunk of molten metal lands on a crease in your jeans, and you don't notice it til it burns thru to your leg....... Or worse, a piece of molten metal lands on your sneaker and melts thru. It's amazing how long it takes to get a shoe off when this happens......

Not saying much Jeff. I've always been pedantic about welding safety. Even though I always wear long sleeved shirts, I've started using a bit of sun screen on my arms and chest if I know I'm going to be welding for more than 15 mins or so.

OH, I've made a couple mistakes welding. First when I was just a kid. I kept lifting the helmet to start the arc. Had patches on my eyes for 2 days. Try throwing gravel in your eyes if you want to know how it feels. Then there was the time I was welding a new low bed trailer frame rails. You need to be in spray arc mode to insure penetration as the metal is 3/4" thick. well I must have had my top button undone and dam near ripped my throat out. One time I was cutting and a piece of molten steel landed in the seat of my pants. I think I still have the tattoo I can't tell, maybe I can send a picture and you can look for me?

Will someone explain to me why this post is so wide. I have to scroll back and forth to read the text. It seems to vary from one topic to the next. If someone starts a topic on a wide screen does that set the parameter for the post?
Would you trust a weld done by anyone so oblivious to welding safety?

Good question Laurie. Joe's photo is 800 pixels wide. That's about 200 pixels too wide to fit into the screen without causing it to stretch. Please take a few seconds to reduce your photos to no more than 600 pixels wide at the max.
That's some burn Joe. Those are definitly quarters. Am I right Karyn?

Awww GEEZE!!! I had to open this thread..LOL. And to think that I was the only one capable of stuff like that. Years ago, I had a toolbox to weld under the shop truck..well as it goes, I couldn't keep the helmet in position so I opted for the squint and arc method. Spent a week knowing what blind folk go through. Bad part is the folks at the eye foundation hospital here at UAB gave me a frequent visitor card.
Just got over the insides of my thighs and knees being burnt the same way. Welding with shorts with tubing laying on the ground. And naturally it was while it was cold a few weeks ago...sweatpants even hurt.
Good to see...er well, good to know things ar healing up Joe.
