I just purchased Adobe CS2 and boy there is a LOT to learn! For now, I really need to do what one would think would be an easy thing....HA! Not for me.
Have imported some oval shaped pictures with white backgrounds into Photoshop....am trying to use the elliptical crop tool to get rid of the background and just be left with the oval picture. I drag my elliptial marquee around the oval, then what?? Have pressed enter, nothing happens....have double clicked within the marquee...nothing. How do I get rid of the background?? Have ordered some tutorial books and been on-line to different help sites, but I need this done and ready for a customer by tomorrow!!!!
Also, what do I do with the feather option at the top, it won't let me enter 0 as a value and I don't want any feathered edges.

First - does your Photoshop document itself have a transparent or a white background?
I always work with transparent backgrounds....you can select that option when you first create your Photoshop document prior to pasting in your image.
Now...If you have an oval image with a fair amount of contrasting colors, why don't you just select your "magic wand" selection tool and set the value to about 30, then click the white border? That should select the reverse white image that borders your oval image....
Then just hit your "delete" key to remove the white...
Am I following you correctly?
What's your phone number? I can call you and walk you through it.
It's always tough to buy a program you're unfamiliar with and then have an immediate deadline before you know how the software even works....

If your picture is on a layer called "Background" (check the Layers palette) doubleclick on that layer name in the palette and it will change to Layer 0. Now when you erase the background it will actually go transparent.
Now use the elliptical marquee tool again, select your area, go to the "Select" menu, choose "Transform Selection" to adjust the size of the ellipse if needed, hit "Enter". Go back the the "Select" menu, choose "Inverse" which will select everything *outside* of the ellipse, then hit the Delete key or if on a Mac go to "Edit" menu then choose "Clear".
There you go, transparent background.

Select all, then 'cut'. Goto 'file' and create a new file, with white background selected. Then paste the image onto your new file. Make your eliptical selection and goto select and select 'inverse' then edit 'cut'. That should be leaving your oval picture on a white background.
