...While glimpsing some superbowl field prep on TV, there was a shot of a "sign" crew (of about 10 dudes) putting a logo on the field. ...Which got me wondering some things... Does anybody here do this or know much about this type of work? What media (paint?) is used and how is it fixed so it doesn't spread everywhere? How is it applied? Is it waterbased, and is it removable after an event? Is it priced by the sq. foot?
...Thanks.

Doesn't Tony Vickio do that?
And Timi Burrows?

I remember at the first Mazeppa meet someone did a grass painting, but I was too busy to pay attention.
I've often wondered how they do it too.

Just happened to have to look that information up to bid on doing a field for a junior college.

I'm planning to make my own stencils by projecting the image onto artificial grass and cutting it out.

You mean it ain't vinyl??!!!

Visualize a ball carrier tripping over a loose edge and a group of tacklers getting all wadded up in a ball of H.P.

Could add a new dimension of excitement to the game.

Or not.

Mr. Pickett, I've done the end zones and a center logo for a local high school several times... but I'm not going to reveal my methods until I see some more responses.....

I didn't research the techniques, just kinda did it by the seat-o'-my-pants, that's why I don't want to reveal if I'm a dumby or not, until I see the pros tell us how they do it... LOL

I will go this far... I used a combination of the Field Marking cans of paint for fine detail and regular latex paint mixed up in a garden sprayer for the large areas.

WR, I have used several different methods to do grass paintings at race tracks, although I have never done a football field. At race tracks, huge "pounce patterns" are used to get the layout on the grass. At the NASCAR and IRL Indy Car tracks, the patterns are shipped from track to track. They come in Plastic 55 gallon containers and are made of plastic sheet. Missouri Turf Paint makes these patterns for Nascar and IRL. I have made my own, but you will need a LARGE wall to project the image to the plastic sheet. When I work at a track, the patterns and paint all arive from Missouri Turf Paint before I get there. We use Water Based Latex. We spray the design with Airless Sprayers.
I use patterns for logos under 5,000 sq. ft. For paintings that are larger (5,000 to 30,000 sq. ft.), I use a triangulation method that a painter form Atlanta showed me. It works great!
Today, most painters at race tracks use the plastic patterns by "tiling" them together because the paintings are getting more complicated. A good layout is a must, as when you are working on the ground, because you can not see the painting in the right perspective when they are that big and you are standing in the middle of it! You have to have a perfect layout and trust the layout!
On my web site (the Race Track page)there are 'step by step' photos of some paintings showing the pattern application to the finished product.
Pricing is done by the sq. ft.
It is great work, but at race tracks, Nascar is getting to the point of having a large company do all the tracks. The little guy is about gone!
If you get a chance to do a large painting, go for it! You will like it!

If memory serves, Bob Rochon and Cam Bortz did a large home plate logo for the Boston Red Sox a few years back. Sure they can give you some solid advice.

I am glad this topic came up when it did. I have to bid out a job for the AFL. The thing that sucks about this one is the turf has last seasons logos on it. Have to hire a crew to scrub out the old artwork and then move forward with the new stuff.

I haven't done a field yet, lots of floors and walls though.

I looked at the site that Patrick posted they seemd to have a good product. The other vendors I found for field paint were Mautz and MAB. Both companies offer a water based scrubable version for artifical turf purposes.

Billy

Like the others who said it, use field marking paint...latex that can be sprayed in an airless sprayer. I usually rent one at the local Ben Moore store, and use the smallest tip. The fan allows you to cut a pretty clean line...it looks just like a fan brush as it comes out of the tip.

I have also used large plastic patterns from that company Tony mentioned (for the NHRA), but have layed ot a few by hand. I used lime in a pesticide sprayer, with a plastic tube over the end . I mounted the whole thing on wheels, so I wouldn't have to bend over as much.

I saw a program recently that showed them painting the field at Florida State. They said the paint was made specifically for real grass football fields and it actually had fertilizer in it. They had to paint it before every home game. I didn't catch the name.

The used plywood cutouts for each little area of the indian head in the center of the field with a big wand sprayer.
