One Shot Hardner of course, if not available you could use a urethane hardner such as for Dupont, PPG, Sherwin Williams and so on.

Yep, what Len said...

If you have a NAPA close by you can use the urethane hardener or the "MSA" acrylic enamel hardener

I believe that if you're going to use it, use the same brand as your paint.

Now I've used One Shot Hardner with fine results, but one time when my delivery service from N. Glantz ended, and I saw the cost of shipping one can of hardner with the UPS hazmat surcharge added, I bought a can of standard generic enamel hardware at an auto paint store, and it seemed to perform just as well.

One thing about One Shot hardner, as hazardous as iso's are (a nasty ingredient of hardner) Frank Manning, former One Shot guy, told me that One Shot hardner is definatly on the mild side as hardners go.

I've used One-Shot hardener but the acrylic enamel hardener seems to catalize much faster.
The problem I have with the acrylic hardener is that it goes solid in the can before I can use it all. Any ideas about how to keep it from going off?

John, 1Shots hardener #4007

Dave, maybe thats one reason why Frank Manning no longer reps for 1Shot

Ain't is funny how pharmecutical drugs are called medications and catalysts are called hardeners?

When was the last time you mixed oil and water together and it stayed mixed?

Stu, store your hardener in a refridgerator and it will last indefinately, make sure that the cap is screwed tightly.

If in doubt, check the makeup of the hardner, it should be Polyisocyanate ( spelling may not be correct) that's the secret. Note, it's nasty stuff, do not get on your skin, you will ingest it into your blood stream, it will cause nasty side effects as well as brain damage, as if sign writers don't already have brain damage!

Len, I've been speaking of the dangers of using these hardeners for as long as they have been produced as well as the length of time I've been on this board, some very well known persons have sustained injuries as well as death but yet persons continually joke about this stuff as if it can't be that dangerous if its made by a family company. People on this board haven't a friggin clue to whats good, whats dangerous or whats happening for the reason that most aren't on top of their work product and material agenda as they should be. If Gavin were to answer this post, half the people would send out hazardous emails to him before they change their habits no less their idiosyncasis. Whether its hardeners, color mixing, reducers or what have you that relates to this business, most are living in the past or from instructions given by their mentors of years gone by as if nothing has changed.

Just wait, you ain't seen nothing yet [Smile]

I've been using a hardener for synthetic enamels, an automotive product, for many years with success. I don't know the difference between this and the hardener for acrylic enamels. Somehow I assume that potency might be the difference.

After you add hardner to one shot, use what you need, put it in a mayo jar, tight lid,put in refrigerator.Paint will stay soft for a few days.If when you open it and it's starting to get a little thick...add some laquer thinner.

Not unlike the gelling that occurs when you add mineral spirits in the can, the One Shot hardener should be mixed in a separate container unless you are planning to use it all at once. Once added, you are committed to the reaction of the hardener...and the resulting shorter shelf life that comes with it.

If you look here , you'll see that One Shot DOESN'T recommend using mineral spirits any more, but their reducers instead.

Hope this helps...

My Dodge windshield washer resevoir says: "Use Only MOPAR Brand Fluid". Think there may be another reason than compatability? Why does Oneshot Low Temp Reducer contain mineral spirits?

One last thing about using 1Shot hardner is the temp needs to be above 65 Degrees F otherwise your paint will not harden until you add the heat, that is where the chemical reaction point is. That is why keeping it in the frig keeps it from hardening!!!
