I am getting ready to make this sign, and the "At this Time" wording needs to be able to slide over either the "No Vacancy" to cover it up allowing the "Vacancy" portion underneath to appear at the correct time.
Now, before I get nailed for the design, I was stuck under his guidlines....... he originally called me and asked me to be creative, so I took what I knew about him and created this design.... which he did not want, he was certain he wanted a rectangle, so I put my jigsaw away and wen tback to rectangle school once again.
My Question is this, the sign will be made from MDO, and I was thinking of using a piece of DiBond for the sliding piece, but other then routing out a grove in some small wood for the top and bottom rails, I dont know how to make a good quality slider.
Anyone have any tips for me on that?
Thanks in advance......

Joe I would use a small aluminum 'J' channel section to hold a dibond slider. You can just put the channel top and bottom or mitre it and make a small frame, simple job. You might want to look at the word 'lewis' again, seems to be a bit lost into the background Cheers Terry

Joe, you might try Velcro in a dark color. I did that on a local church sign that has a winter Mass schedule, making a small Alumalite cover. It lasted for years. But if you use two scripts on the same sign I am gonna come over there and give you a big wedgie. Same for using black on dark brown with red drop-shadders. That bottom sign would work just fine on a rectangle.

Well good thing it isnt black, it is a super dark burgandy, and the second script was at the request of the owner, i wanted to put just a little scroll there, but he wanted it that, same as with the funky arc on the name, But he is paying me well for it, thats a plus, i just wont put my name on this one.

I would do the j channel for a sliding application. Another way I've seen is a center hinge and the sign filps over with a latch to hold it down.

Don't know if it's any help but building on Rays suggestion re: magnetic, we've used "magnetically-attractive" paint to good effect to achieve this kind of thing. Brand name here in Canada is "Magnapaint" and it looks basically like iron filings in liquid form (?) You do need to top coat it afterwards. Regular vehicle type magnetic sheeting sticks to it perfectly.

Thanks guys, I think I am gonna go with the "J" channel as the customer really likes the idea of being able to slide it back and forth at will.
It also seems to be the most durable, and this guy has three other "partners" all in the property business, want to make them happy at the start, then tell them to let me (with some hep from my friends) design the signs next time.... I am thinking demensional myself, but time will tell.
Thanks again for the help, you guys (anthropos....non gender-specific) are the best.
