Fellers sent me this vinyl: small engine turned gold 50D by COBURN. Is any one familiar with this, and can I use application fluid when installing it?

Well I googled coburn as I did to get recommended press and speed, I didn't see it before but they recommend not using wet app for this. They do say if you must then use a fine mist! Your right Checkers coburn is a r tape product. Thanks. Since I'm putting this over an outline I think I will use the app.fluid sparingly. I'm using clear tape how does that work with app. fluid?

Dana, Be very Carefull where you use the engine Turn. I had put that exact same material Gold on my Truck and a few clients Truck.. Went to crap in 9 mos. Was lifting,Tunneling,Curling and It Turned Black.
As for support goes after that happend. Non Exsitant. No-One would return Phone call. Now Corburn is in the same Catagory as Avery.(The big round file out back)

I have seen Corburn Chamelion do the same thing. What is it with these materials that don't last?

Dana, You are correct with Coburn being bought out by R Tape. But, from what I'm lead to believe, the original owner of Coburn started up making films again. I'm not sure if the company is CET, which is part of R Tape or he's doing his own thing. The main reason for failure with any of their products is the lack of edge sealing. Just like SignGold, the edges need to be properly sealed againts the elements or you will have problems.
Bill, how long ago did this happen and who did you call? Also, where did you buy the vinyl from?

Dana, the problem (on any wet app. with any film) with "just misting" is that in NOT covering all of the adhesive area, you are left with tiny "dry spots" where insuficent liquid will cause poor bonding AND air bubbles.
The adhesives on all the films we have tested over the past 20 years with our products have been very compatible, we found no films or adhesives on marking graphic films that didn't work well with LIBERAL use of R.T. application fluids.
There is a giant misconception out there (even the film manuf. don't understand) the bond from the adhesive will work faster and stronger if the application fluid is wet enough to totaly submerse the adhesive.
If you just "mist it" you are not fully stimulating the adhesive to fast bond, also when you lay film over "misted area" there will be dry areas that become voids or air pockets under film, this equals bubbles !
Don't be afraid to apply any preasure sensitive film wet (as long as you are applying it to a sealed surface).

Wow. Great feed back, I'm glad you mentioned the sealant Checkers. It was the first thing I thought when they said curling and separating. Probably because the film is laminated. I must have read that some where this week, about sealing the edges. I guess now I know why its important!

I've noticed that many, and probably even most specialty vinyls have very short outdoor durability, usually 6 to 12 months. This includes a lot of your mirror golds and chromes and holographic type vinyls. There are of course, exceptions. Some do have a 5 year outdoor durability, and of course Signgold lasts forever (well, sorta). I would always check what the manufacturer says before you use them outside.

I've got coburn's engine turn on my shop van. Its been a year, no problems yet, but I "sealed" the edge by letting my outline (cast) vinyl overlap the coburn about 1/8 inch all the way around.
Also, I wouldn't even think about compound curves with this stuff, it's much too stiff.
