I officially gave my notice at the hardware store today. They just won't let me quit! I agreed, after being begged, to work one day in February.
That is the week that I start my mural in Mars! I may need a bit of wiggly-line advice from Dan, only having seen him paint it twice. It will be a slightly posterized warm creamy sepia view of 1890s Mars, with the visages of modern-day people filling in as the faces on the bodies of the long-time-ago people.
I have a bit of leeway with the structures on Grand Avenue, and I even have to replicate a Coca-Cola sign that was actually there. Do I need permission for this? I also get to paint the undertaker's shop! Neat, huh. Bill Berberich may lend a hand, but I will probably do this all myself. Got a deposit too.
I also sold another logo this week, and landed some more other stuff. A kid came into the hardware today asking about lettering. I had painted the box truck for his family farm a few years ago. He needs me to paint 3 homemade aluminum truck caps. He was trying to get me to cut my price down, quoting my 2002 price on the box truck. "Is it cheaper if I order more?" I told him no. "Is it cheaper if I provide the artwork?" I told him that would cost more. "But it's on the computer, done for us by a professional!" I asked him, what do you think I am? Things are getting better for me, in case some of you still see me as a nay-sayer. I am so happy to be continuing to have the problem of finding enough time to make all my signs. Just today I drove past a sign I bid on that I didn't get, a double-sided 4x6 Alumalite on which I quoted $700, in 3 colors of vynull. I refuse to give it away. I even charged the baseball association for the yearly date changes on their banners! Love....Jill

I'm glad things are picking up for. You are a really great Sign Painter so I don't think you should be surprised that you are getting alot of work. I wish you the best.

Jill, if I lived close to you, I'd prop myself on your doorstep for panel/painting advice! You are soooo talented! I'm glad some are finally noticing that! Congrats!

Ain't that the truth.
Congratulations Jill, you've got it made. Sign work slows down you just go hang out at the hardware store a couple of hours. Seems to work.

Jill, this is so good to hear! Don't worry about that 4'x6', you are getting bigger things than that!!!
You know, if you get a little behind & need a hand on that mural, ( FREE hand at that)call me & I will come down with my brushes! Never did a mural before, but I do have a couple of unused fitches, and I can learn! I got the projector, too, if you need one!

I give you a lot of kudos Jill. You've managed to stay in business for yourself longer than most, doing something you have a true talent for, AND raise kids, manage a home and meet all the bills, ALL BY YOURSELF! Not a small feat.
You are realistic, not afraid to tell it like it is, AND you do what it takes to get it all done for you and your family.
You go girl. You are unstoppable. My hats off to you!

Hmmm....do I hear two offers of help? Once I get things more organized, be afraid, be VERY afraid... I have the paint and the projector, and the charcoal stix and all that other stuff. And this is an "inside" job! In a restaurant that makes a damn good fish sandwich. Thanks folks! Things are looking up here in Mr Ugly's Neighborhood. Love....Jill

Way to go Jill. You are way too talented to be working in a hardware store. Congrats on toughing it out till business improved.
I raised my prices and started using the Signcraft pricing guide. I'm losing very few jobs and getting busier all the time. Stick to your guns on price.
