Well all was getting back to "normal" when after work yesterday i took the kids down the end of the road to the river for a swim along with one of our dogs to cool down. It was really nice in the water , calm and with kangaroos on the other side coming in for a drink, my three girls having a blast with me in the river what could go wrong! Well after a couple bouts of me chasing the dog up and down the waters edge i thought i'd give it another go! WRONG!! i took one big step to get out of the water quick to catch her when i get this massive pain in my leg which just floors me. After a quick visit to the meat market (hospital)they confurm my fears which was a badly ripped calf muscle. I'm really hating this as I have much to do (as always) but takes all my effort just to get arround. So I have to "try" to take it easy. YEp, it does hurt like hell.
Cheers!
Rod

Hope you get better! Gets me wondering if kangaroos ever get muscle spasms from all that jumping! (thanks for the visual, we're about to get some snow and miss those warm lazy days of summer)

What a woose! Little twinge in yer leg. Yer got two of them mate ... hop back to work immediately!
"Feel" for you really. Us "self-employed" don't have 5 days sick leave and compo. I tried accident insurance/income loss but it cost me an "arm and a leg" and I never lost either!
Don't push the return to work. Believe me, you can blow that leg out again real easy before it heals properly, and take twice the time to recover.

Rod, sorry to hear of your injury mate, but to echo Jon,you got another one, now get off of your arse and getting crackn' by jimmy, that paint don't know jack, it will jus lay there till ya tell not to.....
Seriously, torn or ripped muscles or ends aren't fast healers anyway, same problem as a cut on knuckle, daily use and such, requires it to flex, bend, all the time keeping wound from healing quickly...if you must push the envelope, take in more bananas and water, lots of water, it will help the muscle retain it's "elasticity" which is damn important, it prevents or helps to prevent, involuntary spasms in the muscle...loading up w/potassium aids in energy for the muscle, aiding in healing process...calcium intake should be discussed w/doctor, but it's important too when healing...oh the hell w/it, drink at least one glass of milk, not 2%, a day while healing, all this and a healthy diet anyway, you'll be ticking right along in no time....
Get better.........

That sucks, but try to enjoy the time off. It's a good (real good) excuse to take a break. Your customers will have to understand ... it's not like they can just go down the road to get your level of services.

HI Rod, sorry to hear about it...and I know the pain and the shock- I copped a torn calf muscle last July when doing some athletics coaching at school- I wasn't doing much, but it felt like someone had hurled a boulder at me, or fired at my calf muscle with a marble from a slingshot...or hit me there with a big hammer...I couldn't believe it was 'only a torn muscle', it was horrible ! They retear easily if you don't take it easy. I think I was about two to three weeks before I was not limping or hobbling.
Ice, and arnica cream/ointment help a lot, as does peppermint essential oil. They all help dissolve the internal bruising & less-obvious swelling, and so take the pain away faster & help healing.
(edited to add- they tell me it's called "getting old"...and isn't your birthday coming up soon- I think we're the same age (you, me and Dave Fisher) but you're both 4 to 5 months ahead of me...!)

All the best Mate. Look at the bright side. We have a blizzard warning in effect today... No go put on some sun screen and git outside on the hammock.

You're seriously not going to use that as an excuse to get out of work are you? Two years ago I snapped my achille's tendon off the bursa - talk about pain!! I couldn't stand up or walk for about two days. I had the wife go to the store and get some Ace bandages to immobilize it, put an ice pack on it regularly and took Tylenol. I was back at work in less than a week although it was over a year before I could walk without a limp. You calf muscle is at least 6 feet from your hands so get back to work! Just be gentle with it til it heals up. Also, get some arnica gel and rub on it; that stuff is amazing.

Thanks guys! I'm doing most of the stuff you guys mentioned but thanks for the extra advise. I get no simpathy here either so dont feel like your the lone ranger. For you that think i'm laying arround sipping pina coladas by the pool thats not the sorta "woose" i am. Evan though i'm iceing it every hour and trying to rest it up i'm still doing as much as i can without hurting my leg. I do want it to heal fast but i also have a business to run so its straight back into it. This happened sunday afternoon, i took most of yesterday off (not in the workshop cos i couldnt get there) but over the weekend i bought a heap of stuff home to do if i got the time which i didnt , but now i have the time to do those jobs. they are computer jobs ( photoshopping the next few airbrush jobs for clients to approve) I'm lucky at the moment i dont have any heavy or high jobs on as a lot of bigger customers havent fired up for the year yet, but i have quite a bit of kewl airbrush jobs about to kick into gear. Joey: I can still come over and help crank, its a 24 hour flight and i should be brand new by the time i get there hehehe. I have never ripped a calf muscle before but as i raced motorbikes for many years i 'm no stranger to breaks, bruises cuts etc and have always gone straight back to work, even when i had a broken (right) arm and in plaster up to my shoulder. I just got on with it and signed with the other hand. If I dont do it no one will.
Thanks again for your kind words (some of you! heheh)
Now, get off of here and get back to work you bludgers!! I have an excuse!!
Cheers! Rod

Not belittling your pain Rod, but for a minute there I thought you were going to say a croc had got you! The power of suggestion, I suppose. This morning I heard, on the news, about someone escaping after having been taken by a salt-water croc. All the best.

Ha! Yea, I thought the same thing as Arthur, that you saw a croc!!!!
But how 'bout them kangaroos drinking at the water while you were there? To me , that is strange, I cannot picture kangaroos by the lake while I sit there! Are they friendly, Rod?
