There was a security alert on one of the other bb's I frequent. Seems that someone's ex had hacked his way to find out where she spent her time on her computer.
Someone suggested to google your own name, email address etc to see what came up. So I googled my email.
It brought up a Letterville post! Nothing else.
How in the heck can a google search bring up my email to this location?!? I'm not liking that!

It is a 'public' site, viewable by anyone, so yes, be prudent and protect your personal information if you are concerned about it.

None of my email addresses come up in a google search. Donna, your email is part of your signature on each post, so I'm sure that's why Google knows about it.
My email addresses may not show up on searches, but I still get plenty of spam. After being gone for several days I had around 1500 junk emails waiting for me. Luckily I have filters that send most of the junk straight to the trash folder.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

I'd like that rephrased to 'Security Surfer.'
I changed my profile to delete the website link but it isn't taking...
edit: nevermind, it did. But my google still reads my original link. I hope that's just taking it's time too.
I went to another search engine and it brought up 17 posts from this site only. I hope my email link in my sig file was the reason.
I too like Dusty, was using this forum to better my work and the discussions weren't meant for customers to view and to market myself. Thanks for the suggestions!

Donna, it'll take Google a while to crawl the internet and realize there's been a change... and it is also likely to not remove the link right away.
The kicker to this is, if you use the internet on a regular basis, there is a LOT of information about you saved in different data bases that can be searched, if someone wants to go to the effort.
BUT... after all, if some freak decides to abuse your information, your phone number is readily available in lots of different ways, (often even if it is unlisted) and offers much more information such as address, etc. than your email address.
You can even subscribe to services that will give you information based on your tag number, with very little authentication that you are a P.I. or law enforcement.
What does all this mean? It's hard to remain anonymous on the net, but with millions of people putting their life's story and information out in blogs, you are not in much danger with the limited amount of info you have out there...
Now keeping your email secret to prevent spam is a different story and very worthwhile...
I, on the other hand, drop my website name everywhere hoping for traffic and more net orders...

Bear in mind that the more data that piles up, the harder it becomes to find the needle in that haystack. It's said that US authorities had plausible warning of the 9/11 attack, but that they gets lots of those every day and can't really keep up. Even so, I do take the trouble not to leave many tracks on the Web. I never enable Cookies unless I need to, and then I disable. Yes, it's a PITA, but not as much as spam is.
