Kinda sign related - has to do with a chair I just got, put together, decided I hated - and am trying to take it back apart to send back to Overstock.Com.
How in blazes do you get the pneumatic heightadjustment shock absorber out of the hole in the bottom of the seat?????
It slipped right in, but now it won't come out. I gripped it really hard and yanked on it...I banged on with a two X four, I tried twisting it and it won't come out.
Please, I know this description sounds sexual in nature...but I'm dead serious....How can I get this stiff rod out of the seat hole???????

According to all the commercials I have seen..if is still stuck after 4 hours..call your doctor!!!

Hi Todd. That rod probably has an ever-so-slight taper to it, and if you try a bit of physics, you might have some success. Try cooling down the rod by sitting the chair with the rod portion extending down into a pail. Put some ice or snow into the pail first, so that the rod is directly contacting the "coolant". After the rod has cooled, then try removing it. If you've gotten it cold enough, the metal should have contracted slightly, and that might be enough to loosen it up.

We sell a Silicone Lubricant at the Hardware store that will loosen up the tightest ****, BUT if the rod and the hole have interlocking grooves that snap into "Lock" you will never get that thing out.

...or you could look for a snap ring on the top of it. Unfortunately the top is now the part that burried into the hole.

Ok...I did try holding the lever down to see if that might release the shock....but to no avail.
It's weird, because when I put it in (here we go again) it didn't make and "click" sounds like it snapped into place....it just slid in easily - so I assumed it would just pull right back out...hmmmmm
Might have to call tech support.

shove it in the freezer or depending on where you live stick it outside. once cold hits it it will shrink. then you can pull it out
next time you need to lube up your pole before insertion. lubing up your pole will guarantee an absolute ease when pulling out
dont make this mistake again. do you think your pole has swollen more since you put it in? if so maybe you can talk the chain into loosening up a bit

Take a pair of bottle jacks and try to keep the pressure even on both sides. Its like a wheel puller uneven pressure when you pull will just jam it.

I bout two of these stools at Sam' Club and have them located at the walk in counter. But we use them in the back also when the need arises. However the crew has strick orders to keep these looking nice! OR ELSE!

Ok can you get your heat gun and direct the heat at the base of the chair that holds the pole in and just heat it. Try not to heat pole at same time, also can you tap the side of the base that holds the pole with a small plastic/brass hammer the vibrations from the hammer and the expansion from the heat should help. Another thing to try is a strap wrench and twist it out.

Call the manufacturer. Oh wait... they're in China and they don't speak Engrish! So solly.
Todd if you freeze or cool the rod you have to heat up where it goes into the hole. To get the physics of expansion/contraction to work for you there has to be a temperature differential, one hot and one cold.

Are those screws, nuts or rivets recessed into the base around where the pole goes in?
If I was in your place, at this point I'd be looking for any way possible to dismantle that chair even more to see if the base will come off and allow you to push the post out from the other side.

I believe its a conical press fit. If you have not fully pressed it in by strikeing it with a hammer blow you may have luck by trying the following proceedure. Support the seat in the seating position supported upon both sides of the post you are removing. Tap the end of the shaft, at its bottom end from four sides ( north, south, east and west) while applying a downward pull on the shaft. Applying heat to the seat metal pocket would be helpful but you would need to use a heat lamp or heat that would not scorch the paint. A light oil would probably be better.

go in the opposite direction with the lever and have it pushed in so it wont recline. if you lift the lever to adjust the height push it down.

An excellent example of why you should practice the "Foot in Ass" theory. The "Foot in Ass" theory states that all purchases should be made locally if possible so that in the event something bad happens with the purchase you can drive back up there and put a foot in somebody's ass.
If you'd bought the chair from the store up the road you could just take the thing back to them and make them worry about taking it apart.

Well, I called the chair company and they said basically what some of you said - - just keep whacking it on all four sides and pulling on it till it comes out.....
Tomorrow.......me and the chair are going to rumble.

Todd....No wonder you don't like the chair....you've got it upside down....try turning it over and I and sitting on that wide base....bet it will be a lot more comfortable and you might just decide to keep it
