Yee-Haa! I'm down 8lbs for the month of November, gonna see if I can drop another this month despite Holidays.
Anyone have a good "theme" for this month's health club post? I'm actually out of ideas cause I'm pretty much on autopilot now and getting the results I want.
ANyone need some nutrition and fitness pointers?

After Thanksgiving week and spending a week in a hotel in Canada, I'm happy to announce that I only gained 2 pounds. I thought the damage would be worse. I'm back home now and am going to eat "very healthy" until Christmas eve. It seems like I've been stuck at 218 forever (now 220).

Physio through my car accident has put me in a core strengthening program. I'm happy to report there is progress, however more still needs to be done. Physio is going to talk to the insurance adjuster about getting me signed up for 3 months at a fitness center with a personal trainer to get me up to par.
I'm walking up a hill behind me with a neighbour whenever we can connect. I'm going to start it on a reg basis next week, hopefully 3x a week as my reg physio stuff is now over.
I'm up the 10 lb I lost in the summer. I don't know what happened! I only drink water and coffee, low to no junk, homemade foods when possible. Frustrating! I guess I just have to keep moving and quit eating.
I hope next month I have something better to report!

In february this year i decided "ENOUGH". I am 5 feet 3 inches tall and was weighing in at 70 kilos (anyone know how to convert to pounds?) 10 months later i am 58 kilos.....YIPPEEEEEEEEE! I've been following a very easy diet which eliminates any kind of junkfood, crisps, snack bars, pies, pastry, cakes, bikkies etc. I've almost eliminated cheese and I only have diet yoghurt. Zero fizzie drinks or cordials. Water, coffee (the occasional beer or two!)and milo. I stick to meat, fruit and veges for tea at night and have a hot drink whenever i crave pudding! The dog's eternally grateful as she gets walked for half an hour three times each week, I also do pilates once per week. Some days I can't be bothered and think oh to heck with it all. It's at these moments I have a good look at photographs taken at the beginning of the year! Christmas is going to be quite hard but I figure as I'm on holiday I can eat a little more and double the exercise to make up for it!!

Walked a ton in AC. First night, I was really feeling it. Second night, the 2 mile walk from showboat to hotel, after walking all over the show & boardwalk didn't faze me 1 bit. Came home 4 lbs lighter & really fired up! I was first person in the gym this morning & really pushed myself.

Holey Moley! 8lbs Mike, that's really something! Almost time for another updated photo of you!
I have not hopped on the scales lately because I don't wanna know! I've been going crazy with chocolate. It's out of control here! I don't know what's up with me. I'm still fitting in my jeans, so that's a good thing. But if I don't stop with the sweets soon, I'm afraid it's going to catch up with me.
I've slacked off this week with the exercise too. Also not a good thing. I've been missing it tho, so I'm getting back on track with my routine this week.
Been so busy with the little holiday wave here. Pet sitting for people, shopping, and doing some major holiday cleaning around here.
I bought myself a new vacuum cleaner so that's been giving me a workout! I've been putting it to the test here.
Hope everyone has a very happy and HEALTHY Christmas season!

No rules, just fun! (I think I heard that somewhere, ha ha)
I just can't imagine life without exercise.
Good for the body, good for the mind, good for the spirit.
Lots of energy, clear creative thinking, and mostly in a good mood. (I get to eat more also, and I like that)
Getting into exercising is like getting used to using latex paints. Once you see how nice it is, you never want to go back to the old way, and you wonder why you didn't do it sooner!
Ahhhhh 16 deg's this morning and it feels refreshing! Anyone for a ride?
Just move, Bob

I have to agree with Bob. Once you make exercise a big part of your lifestyle, you'll want to keep up with it.
It gives you energy, gets you out of any funks you may find yourself in, and clears your head.
It also perks up your metabolism so your body burns more calories efficiently in your normal day to day activities. So it's true that you can get away with eating alittle more because of that. That's a plus!
You don't have to go overboard with the exercise thing either. It's about being able to plug in some active movement on a regular basis, not training for the Ironman!
It's not about exercising up until you reach a certain weight goal, only to return to the fridge and the couch afterwards either.
By keeping it simple and doing it with regularity, you are more apt to keep up with it for your lifetime.
You gotta work off what you put on, tone up what's loose, and strengthen what's weak. It's just that simple.
So, do keep it movin'ana shakin' folks! Take a walk, ride a bike, sign up for a class, or throw in a workout dvd, ... whatever!
High fives to those who are getting it and cheers for those who wanna get it!
Us health nuts gotta stick together. ~nettie

A nice long stretch with the headphones does wonders also.
More flexiblity, less sore muscles, and my back is doing great. At 41 years old, that's a good thing. I sure hope I keep it up for my lifetime.
My neighbor is 76 years old. He walks daily, and stretches regularly. That guy pushes a lawn mower, runs a chainsaw, and plants a nice size garden every year. I hope I am still doing that at 76 also. The proof is in the pudding!
A good stretch is like "de-fragging" the hard drive.
Life is good!
Just move, Bob

When you can prove to us you walk 2 miles every day, eat oatmeal and some fruit, take every vitamin and mineral you think you can swallow, work out on some form of exercise equipment every day and go to the chiropractor 2 times a month....and then prove to us you have lost at least 5 pounds in 10 days..... Then...you may be allowed to join the Letterville Health and fitness club.
Oh, yeah, you can't smoke in here either! You can drink beer in moderation!
Oh, and if you can get SHORTREED to join the club...you can be President of the Health Club!

whew... went on my mountainside walk today. I'm suppose to be working, but, well, I drove cody to school and picked up my walking friend on the way back and she talked me into it. I should have known better!
It was GREAT! I haven't been for awhile, but I did better than ever before. I went further this time (trying to keep up with the pro) and got to see a log house I've been wanting to peek at. My goal last time was to view the front of the house on top of the hill and I did today.
There is nothing quite like walking uphill. My oh my...
Thanks for the reminder Bob. I'm suppose to be doing all these stretching exercises. Guess I'd better make that one of my daily things to do. Kinda got put off.
I personally like stretching late at night. Once all the work is done, it's time to clear the mind. Grab you favorite beverage, put on the headphones turn on the radio, or throw in a CD.
Most songs average 3-5 minutes, so if I stretch each limb or area for the length of each song, I could get a good 30 minute stretch, and wow, does that feel good.
Legs, arms, back, sides, neck, etc.
Must breathe Donnason. Always breathe. ha ha
Talk about sleeping well!
Good for the soul.
Just move, Bob

Well, after eating healthy for three days and taking a nice walk after work, I lost the two pounds I gained plus one. Now what was that about exercise? I might have to give that another try. I've got a jumprope, but a third floor apt. is a little noisy for those downstairs. I'd kill to be around 175 by spring! Where can I buy some discipline?

Hey Terry, keep up with the healthier eating because that accounts for 90% of the weightloss! Exercise is more for strengthening your muscles and heart than anything else, plus it gives you a high.... ahhhhhh.... yeahhh that's good stuff...

I need some healthy breakfast options here. Ideas please! I'm attempting to get off the crappy carb thing for abit until I see some progress. So no toast for me! I'm a scrambled egg fanatic but my egg lady is no longer selling so I'm always running on low and need other options.
Did my walk today. No one to walk with so Jenna (dog) happily joined me. I generally don't bring her because she pulls too hard which pulls my bad hip out. Today I just was on her to stay by my side without the leash and she did pretty good, so she wins another trip up the mountain next time!
I'm also happy to report, I'm only 5 lb up from summer, not 10. Seems I was somewhat bloated from not moving enough. WHEW!!! Room for some Christmas goodies after all.
So, please share any breakfast or meal or snack ideas that are easy to make and healthy if you have a moment! I'm eager to stock up on the right stuff.
You don't need to give up carbs, just use better ones!
If you like toast, you can have it! Just look for 100% Whole Grain breads. It's gotta have that 100% in there otherwise you don't know what you're getting. You should also check out Ezekiel Bread, made by Food for Life. Ezekiel bread has all natural ingredients including sprouted grains and NO preservatives. If your store has it, it will be in the Organic section or at least in a refrigerated/freezer case in order to keep it fresh. Food for Life also makes english muffins, raisin bread and other breads that are really healthy for you.
Oatmeal is really good for you but get either Whole Groats (what oats are made from), Steel Cut oats or Rolled oats and look for them in the bulk food section of the store because they're generally cheaper than pre-packaged versions. I usually get rolled oats and they're 55 cents a pound. A buck worth of oats lasts me probably two weeks eating it twice a day.
Cream of Wheat and Farina are good hot cereals and I also use a 10 grain hot cereal from Bob's Red Mill. I buy it at my local grocer but you can see what's available (tons of stuff) online at http://www.bobsredmill.com/
The reason those carbs are good for you is because they're Low Glycemic Index foods which means they take longer for the body to process and you don't get insulin spikes with subsequent blood sugar drops which is what makes you tired and hungry again shortly after eating most other carbohydrates.
I eat a lot of egg whites but I usually buy 100% egg whites in a carton instead of wasting all those yolks. I normally use 1/2 cup of egg whites plus 1 whole egg, or 1/2 cup of whites plus 3 links of turkey breakfast sausage which I slice up and cook with the egg whites. This tastes awesome! The turkey breakfast sausage is really good on its own too, look in all your freezer cases for it.
For a nice easy, super fast not to mention absolutely AWESOME tasting breakfast drop some milk, rolled oats, chocolate whey protein powder and natural peanut butter into the blender. You've got high quality protein from the whey and milk, good carbohydrates from the oats and nice healthy fats from the peanut butter - couldn't get a more complete meal than that!

Donna, If you'd like to try something a little different, add a tablespoon (or two) of Grapenuts to your favorite low fat yogurt. I like peach.

I've already got Christmas week scheduled as a recovery week off from the gym, I'll be out of town anyway, and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day ought to aid me in resetting my metabolism at a higher level so when I get back I can keep on burning it off!

Mike...sounds like you you're really up on the healthy foods and I too use Ezekial bread....one question on the whey powder....I had a great concoction I would eat every day after working out....a big bowl of low fat organic yogurt....a scoup of the chocolate whey powder (the powder alone is 25 grams of protien)....with walnuts and raisins mixed in....my concern was the whey powder....I noticed 1 serving contained a bunch of cholesterol....like 30 units of it....so I cut it out....check your label for cholesterol levels and if your brand has single digits per serving let me know the brand....I loved the stuff and would like to start back using it but only if it doesn't increases my cholesterol drastically....you might want to check that out
Make that *243lbs* - I was feeling lighter today and curiosity killed the cat.
Rusty, my powder has 70mg per serving and that's nothing compared to the two whole eggs I'm gettin ready to eat totalling 500mg, plus a whey shake, a bowl of oatmeal and a banana.
I get plenty of HDL cholesterol in my diet which actually helps to lower the LDL levels.

Mike....sounds like a great breakfast....I'm really working hard on nutrition....I roughly know what to stay away from and what to eat but I have much to learn....which foods should I be adding to my diet to increase those HDL levels....thanks for all this good info....as someone who is uninsurable I'm doing what I have control over to stay healthy....of course that doesn't rule out accidents and heredity which for the most part are out of my control....hoping the day will come when the USA joins the rest of the modern world and offer universal healthcare for it's people....seems like the moral thing to do....my recent visit to the emergency room cost $2500....I inherited a small heart problem and one evening thought it was going to take me out....I saw the doctor for maybe 10 minutes....it was a false alarm....I have it paid down to $700....you know how much work I have to do to pay this $2500 off....lord knows how much it will cost when something is really wrong....in what seems for the most part to be a "for profit only" healthcare system....the uninsurable like myself are extremely vulnerable....so I'm trying to take control over what I can

Healthy fats increase HDL levels - olive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, grape-seed oil, peanut oil, fish and fish oils, nut oils and nuts (especially walnuts), avocados.
If you get a blood test and HDL is at least 40, you're at low risk but the higher it is, the better off you are. If it's over 100, well there's no record of anyone with an HDL over 100 of ever having a heart attack *that's related to blood flow* so you'd be doing real well at that point.

Mike....GREAT GREAT GREAT....I do olive oil..lots of salmon, tuna, and sardines pecans, cashews, walnuts and avocados....my HDL should be up there....maybe I'll add the chocolate whey powder back to my diet....thanks again
You don't absolutely need the protein powder, in fact it's better if you can get your protein from whole food sources, but the powder sure is fast and convenient. I use powder twice a day at the most.

Left work early today and went to see the doc. I was dizzy, hot and had chest pains. My doc said that my blood pressure was incredibly high and I was lucky I didn't have a stroke at work. No more sugars, caffiene and must get more than 5 hours of sleep a night. I'm back where I was last Nov. except 54 lbs. lighter. Now I'm on three meds. (blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol) and a very strict diet. Happy New Year!

If any of you are interested in recipes which have a healthy heart rating for cholesterol levels etc try the link above.
Here in New Zealand the Heart foundation has a programmed called the Heart Tick. Foods which are deemed healthy for fat content etc have a red tick on the labelling. They have a great web-site that is full of awesome information for anyone who is interested in their health.
