As part of publicity for the new logo, KFC commissioned a giant, 87,000-square foot version of it that can be seen from space. The massive logo consists of 65,000 1-foot square painted tiles that were laid out in the Nevada desert over 24 days.

Hehehe....the first thing I'd expect is an environmental impact report, then fill out a variance application, shell out a few bucks for attorney's fee......

Environmental impact report.. hahaha... you're setting baked dirt down on top of... sunbaked dirt.. out in the middle of nowhere.. in a state where prostitution is legal and politics pave the way for huge hotels and casinos to bring in the green. Environmental impact?? LOL.
Nevada is enjoying record growth and encouraging it by sidestepping red tape!.. and income taxes (yeah that's right, no income taxes) and letting developers do pretty much whatever they want.

Then again, I can go to Google maps and see my Jeep parked in the backyard so technically that's visible from space too. The question is...how many people in space are actually gonna land in a KFC parking lot?

That puzzled me too... They're probably counting the length times the height....like we do with fancy shaped signs.
I'm with Wayne on this... the negative space around the neck was counted in the 87K (for Glenn's permit... knowing how Gov't always counts negative space)

Since it's not meant to be viewed by passing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, it's not considered "on premise" signage. So, a sign permit wouldn't be required.

It's gotta be Yesco, about the only place that has the facilitys to do it. I would think the price would be about 6.5 mill $100 per tile...layout,masking,paint,install, site prep. Vegas gets about $24.00 per hour for a journyman.
