Okay I was just wonderin' what figures you all would come up with.. two 4x16 2mm diebond signs(thanks to you folks)by the way this stuff is nice to work with,4 sheets diebond, 113 feet high perf vinyl ( I only have a 24" plotter)hand paint purple border. I'm coming up with $1650 for both signs...how did I do? (I realize prices will vary in different areas but oh well). Muchas gracias!

Sounds good to me- who's affixing them, & who pays for delivery, or is it included? I'd be hand painting a bit more, like maybe all the grey, but that's just me! I'm not sonvinced a red outline around blue text up top is the way to go- perhaps a maroon outline would be more noticable & harmonious & less jarring?
Did you consider doing the edge border in vinyl- just put a metre long piece in the plotter & cut it into strips, and apply them ?
(P.S. when I first read it, I wondered how you were going to get the perforated vinyl 113 feet up in the air "113 feet high perf vinyl..." )

Hiya Peewee, I need a little clarification on your vinyl use. Is it 113 square feet, or 113 linear feet of 24" media? Either way, I'm thinking you're a little low. I'm coming up with $928 per sign or add another $100± if its 226 sq. ft. of vinyl.

113 linear feet... I was going to paint them but a few things changed. Like last line of copy in vinyl so it could be changed if need be,and the red lettering and outline. I have had bad experiences with red and haven't got my hands on the new stuff. I was going to do the grey in paint but figgered we are going this far so why stop. They will hang them and pick them up.. I like the idea of the using strips for the boarder. Thanks again for another good idea!

Wish I were in a bigger market sometimes. The best I can get for signs like those is $11/sq. ft. ($704 each, $1408 for the pair).
Then again, my overhead is much lower, too.

Hey Mike, You can't get it if you don't ask for it! Sure, your market has some effect on your pricing, but, it's not as much as you think. If I was able to shave $600 a month off my rent (50%), I would only be able to reduce my hourly rate by $5.83 per hour. So, on a job like this, the savings to the customer would be less than $100, figuring the job would take a little more than a day to complete.

I don't attempt to price by the square foot but rather by the materials that will be used and the time it takes to do the job. I also factor in what the customer will get out of the job.
This weekend I will be doing a 4'x16' construction project sign. 1/2 MDO prepainted white. 2-36"x70" laminated digital prints and 54" of 24" intermediate vinyl. I am charging $950 for the job. I will have about 4 hrs of labour in it, the MDO costs about $150, the vinyl is worth maybe $10 and the two digital prints cost me $385. Works out that I will be getting around $400 for the 4 hours of my time.
Oh, I will deliver in the van, a 10 minute drive.

Materials with tax and delivery would be about $500 $500 x 4 would be $2000.00
materials + sales & design time + labor to make the sign + profit
Each one of the above items between the "+" marks by rule of thumb could be considered as 1/4 of the job.
materials 25% sales and design 25% labor to produce 35 to 40% Profit 10 to 15%
installation extra by time spent.
You can't adjust you materials downward...its a given
You could shave off some sales and design time You could save some labor costs You could chuck your profit margin in the waste can to lower the cost of the project.
You are in business to make money...not signs.
You have to decide if you want the job bad enough to say you make signs, or if you are in business to make money and feed yourself and family.
Edited to say:
"But what if I lose the job asking $2000?", you might ask out of fear you have to win every bid.
There has to be another job around the corner that will pay you what the job should cost allowing you to make enough money for a healty business.
If there is not another job around the corner, then sacrificing money on this $2000 bid will not save your business, will it? No it wont.
So either way, you'll lose and have to go work somewhere else.
So why not have the guts to ask for the sign's worth, with a stone cold face and expect to lose it? (but you may not lose it and you will have your self respect)
If we can't make a profit doing sign work, then we should consider getting another job where we can make money with out saying "I can't charge those prices around here"
