I have been contracted to sandblast a design on quite a few panels, ranging from 24 x 24 to 24 x 48 inches. While I have no problem in doing this the question is regarding tempered glass.
1. The design is aprox. 80% coverage of each panel. 2. My work area is not heated when not in the shop area. 3. What problems can develop with the resist being heated and cooled. 4. Can the glass take the added stress of being blasted and going thru heat/cold over an extended period?
The entire project will be done during the winter months and can be freezing at time!
The panels, when completed, will be installed as bar tops and bar fronts. (1/2 - 3/8 thick) I will not be moving any of the panels. All that will be done by the glass supplier.
I plan to only etch the surface, NO carved blasting!
Am I courting disaster?

Went to cuttingedge.com and it does not appear to be related to signage but rather collecting of custom knives!
Is there another site that you were refering to?

Have you considered screen printing the panels with Glass Etch? Or does the client definitely need sand blasted panels? While sand blasting gives a nice effect, I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole.

I have a book called "Glass Etching II, Carving Techniques & Designs", by Debra Feldberg Oxley and Norman Dobbins. It states: "Tempered glass can be surface etched and shaded, but not carved. It requires special handling, including the use of fine abrasives and low blasting pressures."
It recommends cutting back on pressure 20 to 30 percent, and using abrasives no larger than 120 grit. It is also suggested that the nozzle be kept further away from the surface of the glass.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005
