If this country has a drug problem, maybe we arent looking in the right place. I think you should have to be 18 to get into a Starbucks, We got a nation of latte junkies. I was at the mall the other day and had a run in with some white teen girls that were wacked out on triple chi's. We got 14 year olds drinking 2,3 even 4 maocha frappachinnos a day! This is a serious matter that is being overlooked by the community, and it must stop!!!
Caffeine is a drug that in large amounts, especially over an extended period of time, can lead to a condition termed "caffeinism." Caffeinism usually combines physical addiction with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions including nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscle twitching (hyperreflexia), insomnia and heart palpitations. (Under a rigid definition of addiction, meaning a process of escalating use, "caffeine dependency" would be a more descriptive term. However, under the widely accepted definition "chronic pattern of behavior that is perceived to be difficult to quit," caffeine may be said to be addictive.) Furthermore, because caffeine increases the production of stomach acid, high usage over time can lead to peptic ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. However, since both "regular" and decaffeinated coffees have also been shown to stimulate the gastric mucosa and increase stomach acid secretion, caffeine is probably not the only component of coffee responsible.
There are four caffeine-induced psychiatric disorders recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition: caffeine intoxication, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder, caffeine-induced sleep disorder, and caffeine-related disorder not otherwise specified (NOS).
Caffeine intoxication An acute overdose of caffeine, usually in excess of 250 milligrams (more than 2-3 cups of brewed coffee), can result in a state of central nervous system overstimulation called caffeine intoxication. The symptoms of caffeine intoxication may include restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushing of the face, increased urination, gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, a rambling flow of thought and speech, irregular or rapid heart beat, and psychomotor agitation.
In cases of extreme overdose, death can result. The median lethal dose (LD50) of caffeine is 192 milligrams per kilogram in rats. The LD50 of caffeine is dependent on weight and individual sensitivity and estimated to be about 150 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass, roughly 140 to 180 cups of coffee for an average adult taken within a limited timeframe that is dependent on half-life. Though achieving lethal dose with coffee would be exceptionally difficult with regular coffee, there have been reported deaths from intentional overdosing on caffeine pills. Treatment of severe caffeine intoxication is generally supportive, providing treatment of the immediate symptoms, but if the patient has very high serum levels of caffeine then peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, or hemofiltration may be required.
Anxiety and sleep disorders Long-term overuse of caffeine can elicit a number of psychiatric disturbances. Two such disorders recognized by the APA are caffeine-induced sleep disorder and caffeine-induced anxiety disorder.
In the case of caffeine-induced sleep disorder, an individual regularly ingests high doses of caffeine sufficient to induce a significant disturbance in his or her sleep, sufficiently severe to warrant clinical attention.
In some individuals, the large amounts of caffeine can induce anxiety severe enough to necessitate clinical attention. This caffeine-induced anxiety disorder can take many forms, from generalized anxiety, to panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, or even phobic symptoms.[38] Because this condition can mimic organic mental disorders, such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or even schizophrenia, a number of medical professionals believe caffeine-intoxicated people are routinely misdiagnosed and unnecessarily medicated when the treatment for caffeine-induced psychosis would simply be to withhold further caffeine. A Study in the British Journal of Addiction concluded that caffeinism, although infrequently diagnosed, may afflict as many as one person in ten of the population

Only today I was saying to my father in law that if ever someone wanted to conquer the US of A the best way would be to cut off their coffee supplies.
When I went to the Jacksonville Walldog meet I was surprised to find that most gas stations have four or five pots of different blends brewing.
Folks try going without it for a week and see if you are dependant on it or not.

Why bring color into this story? Are you racist?! What does skin color have to do with anything?

I drink quite a bit of coffee every day. I really like the smell and flavor in the morning. But during the day I usally have a cup after lunch. And during the winter months I may drink the hot black liquid just to warm my frozen bones.

It's funny, when people feel convicted about something, they always try to label the other guy "judgemental."
Well, the real hypocrisy is labeling someone judgmental, because in doing so - you're in effect casting judgment yourself.
Thereby, you're being "judgmental" and "self-righteous" yourself.
The fact of human nature is this: Everybodyincluding you makes judgements many times a day towards people, events, circumstances, etc.
My point was that I found it odd that people would feel sorry for a guy that got nailed on drug possession, and in fact began a thread promoting drug use.
I'm apparantly not the only one throwing 'stones' as it's illegal across the US.

Todd, he wasn't nailed on drug possession as you stated, he was simply ticketed and sent on his way. His ticket was similar to a traffic violation. these tickets are called misdemeanors same as a parking ticket or a speeding ticket to be precise.

I haven't had any caffeine in over three weeks. The headaches have subsided - I even went to straight asprin over my beloved Exedrin (65mg caffeine ea) - but not completely.
I'll go back, of course, but I just needed to push the reset button.
The 'feine is definately one of the most addictive substances I've ever dealt with.

Some guy in a red apron and a paper hat is selling them dope at the mall too. Seems like a few people here are very opinonated about there cuppa joe. "don't mess with me coffee" Sorry to stir it up (again) but I didn't say outlaw caffeine, but its a 'proven fact' the stuff is super addictive, so how about some adult supervision for these 14 y o girls doing 5,700 mg. triple chi lattes with a double espresso shot and extra whipped cream. As I said Starbucks should be 18 and older to get in. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
here is something ironic; when you quit drugs or alcohol you go to NA or AA the whole meeting revolves around coffee and and cigarettes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My name is Ricky and I am a coffeeholic. I became addicted when I went to the Dixie Letterheads and some guy (name withheld but it rhymes with "Doug Allen") from Hawaii brought this "killer kona koffee"; I was hooked from the first sip.

I made about 20 pots of the mmmm kona coffee at Dixie over three days. NOT to "tell", but Si was 'dealing' it, too. I also have 'a Friend' in HI who sends me Macadamia nuts.
I drank three cups a day, over three days. AND I went 'way overboard on the Sugar.
It's true, I'm doomed...pusher AND user: My name is Karen. I'm guilty. (And it was GOOOOD!!!)
BUT, in fact? Coffee is water soluble. Pee it out. It's a quickie fix. POT or Coffee for Teens? I vote for the caffeine rush over pot, or drugs.

Ken, I just printed it out for anyone of the young people like my son that think they are just having fun. I've seen him take those pills with caffeine in them, can't remember the name, when he was on his workout binges. I hated it and he figured it out. then he used to drink those jolt drinks and energy drinks with caffeine. They think since they get it from the health food store, it's okay. Now, he just does the gatorade, and juice and water, thank God. His moods are better too. I'm glad I have the print out even if it was about "white girls" you silly, I didn't think you really meant to put that in, just being descriptive, the artist in you.

Deb, now that you printed it I can confess, it was a farse, the 'white girl' thing was an inside joke and there was no run in. I made the whole story up just to get some bad attention. I appologies for misleading my fellow letterheads but if it helps just one person....
Karen, this was not a vote on which one you should give your teenagers POT or Caffeine... either way, you should have chosen 'c' none of the above. Just because it is legal, it is still a strong and addictive drug. No a can of Coke is not going to turn your kid into a junkie, in moderation it can be ok. 6-7 cups a day can become a serious addiction and lead to health problems.
