What's wrong with the photo? I'm not sitting in the passengers seat next to Steve giving him directions on how to drive in NZ. In fact he's still sitting in our drive..!! However he left here with Barb about an hour ago to head north and so far no panic phone calls. About the other 2 photos... the first is from the home of retired signwriter Murray Stuart who now just paints beautiful water colours and the second is of Rothesay Bay where I grew up and is only 10 minutes from here. You may notice in the background Rangitoto Island, an extinct volcano in the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland.

I can tell you from my recent experience in the Cayman Islands... don't have a brain fart at the wrong time.. unless you particular like honking and waving locals. The dangerous part of driving on the "wrong" side of the road is when you get about 80% accustomed to it and start getting careless..
A few close calls, but no dents in the rental car, thank God...

Jon..I hear ya about the 80% confidence thing. After 2 weeks of driving around Barbados I had it down pat..Except for left hand turns..ALWAYS seemed to make the wide turn right into oncoming traffic!!
Good thing the rental company installed that huge reverse magnet that pushed us back into the left lane and out of trouble!!

I had the same experience back in '83- I caught a ferry from England to Holland, and hired a car to spend a week driving around there- my first experience was getting stuck on a roundabout and having no idea how to get off- all the turns were going against my grain! Then in peak hour traffic in Amsterdam, it wasn't so bad- just follow the car in front, closely, but the rear view mirror was in the wrong place, as was the indicator lever on the steering column.

Damn! Those pics make me feel almost homesick. I had the same sort of view of Rangitoto from my old place. Mind you, its a perfect cone and looks the same from all directions. Didn't erupt all that long ago either!
Just wait till you get further south, they still erupt down there

Beautiful pictures Steve, keep them coming. Just might get up enough courage to make the trip some day.

Daddy always said that old Burma Shave jingle: "Don't Stick Your Elbow Out So Far! It Might Go Home In Another Car!" Just teasing. Looks like a wonderful place. I never drive in other countries tho...I'm dangerous enough here. Do they have roundabouts there? Those do my head in. love....Jill

Steve, can you bottle that up and send it here? Now I see how far from heaven I've been! At least you don't drive in the ice like the Aussies when they come here! You remind me of that show, "Fantasy Island" with your pics. Should we send your belongings over, since you won't be back?

After you letting Devo drive in canada we all agreed that it's just not smart to let anyone sit on the wrong side of any motor vehicle with the keys in there hand (grin)
one thing I like about motorcycles... there is only one side!
looks like you are having fun though so that's good, I'm just a tad concerned that you will get to us in one piece
don't forget the golden rule bro... a driver anywhere in the world just has to remember to stay in the middle of the road
some of the roads Devo found in NZ only had a middle hehehe
say hello to Brian and Jeff for us when you get to the meeting... and if Elvis is there get him to include you in the sign-a-long
cheers gail
