I could be totally mistaken but isn't Minnesota in the high plains? So Boone if that were true, where would Bendel get the wood. Do you know that the first Straw Bale home was built in Minnesota back in the 1800's and still survives today.
Btw Bendel, I use propane but wish I had natural gas

this is a coming of age thing Joey Its important to be "in heat" as you grow older and loose yer marbles ..to the point where you wear a speedo and fuzz lined slippers in public.... as fas as advice to Bendel....we didnt help much.. how about burnin buffalo chips....?

What are my thoughts? AT LAST!!!!! Let it snow!! If and when I need to get warm I can use either one; I've got electric central heat and a wood fireplace. In the last two houses we bought I put propane gas logs in one and a freestanding in the other one. Sometimes I get sick of the woodsey smell but most of the time it's OK.

When I was a kid We heard a big boom.My neighbor took us for a ride to see. It turns out a 3 decker had a gas leak "city gas"the service man rang the bell and reduced it to a foundation. I have oil. We had propain for hot water and cooking but when I would call to report, I smell gas at 5pm a worker would come sniff around and proclaim I can't smeell it! I had wood and coal too but its easyer to do my job for a couple extra hours a week to buy the oil than spend the weekends spliting and hauling.

boro will get a chuckle here.....as a kid in pa we heated in the winter with COAL. 8 TO 10 TONS A WINTER....and i got the job of hauling out the ashes......AND IT WAS ONLY $7 A TON THEN!!!!

Fuel Oil for heat, propane for dryer, range, & water heater at my house, natural gas at the studio.
Fuel oil is muuuuuch warmer, (not as warm as wood), but at 2.66 a gallon, the price is crazy. We paid 1.04 a gallon in 2004. Fuel oil produces 156000 btu per gallon whereas propane is around 98000. Natural gas is somewhat higher than propane.

I am finally replacing my 56-year-old natural gas furnace with a new energy-efficient gas model. Last winter my heating bills averaged $400/month. Would it be less expensive to just buy a new furnace than to convert to propane? I know propane cooks faster than natural gas...but it also has that stinky odor when the tank is low. Michael, I would suggest a corn stove like Mike Meyer had at his shop! That thing was HOT! love....Jill

STOP JILL!!!!! we did that.....we had a furnace in here that was 1961....and relpaced it with 1998 new conmputer controled no pilot lite!!! wellllll i will tell you that old gas furnace produced more heat when it ran.....you could feel the temp increase at the register....this new one.....heats....and runs longer...and dont produce as much BTU'S as that old one did.....it works longer to produce the same heat that old one would do in half the time.......keep that old one for the garage...don let the guy take it!!! ADDITION:we moved here in 98 and sicne we have nat gas to house we opted for a GAS STOVE!!!! well again i dig in my memeory of the GAS STOVE we had on the farm in pa(gas wells on the farm, so all the nat gas was free)and i remember on that sove you could boil water in pot in a very short period, the flames from the burners....with nothing sittin on them would come up 2-3" tall and boilin a pot of water took no time at all. welllllwe got our $400 brand new MAYTAG gas stove, i got it hooked up andput on a big pan of water....and waited, and waite, and waited......for it to boil...WHICH IT NEVER DID!!!! called th place i bought it he said to call the maytag repairman....i did he came out....and we did the same thing.....BRAND NE GAS STOVE CANT EVEN BOIL WATER!!!! now repairman tells em why. seems some regulatory board says...ALL NEW GAS STOVES cant have buners that produce more the 13,000-15,000 BTU. being ours was a cheaper modle stove(not the $600 modle)the stove come with a an orfice for the gas to come thru of only 9,000 BTU'S!!!!!! WONT EVEN BOIL WATER.... so the maytag guy say he will fix it...he come vack couple days later with new ORFICES for the stove buners of 13,000 BTU's!!!! now it boils water.....but still nowhere near the old stove did on the farm. since then ive learned if you want a fully functional gas stove with burners that COOK....you need to look at restaurant quality type stove like VULCAN, WOLF, IMPERIAL, SOUTHBEND.

Yup, OP, the guy did tell me that the new furnace will be nowhere near as hot or run as long as my old one. My furnace is too big for my house. My mom's furnace is new and doesn't blow out toasty air like mine does. I even have floor vents cuz my house is so old. There is nothing nicer than standing over one in the winter and letting it blow up into my housecoat! But I just can't afford these gas bills anymore. And I'm getting a heck of a good deal. My 2-year old gas stove boils water just fine. It's a Frigidaire. love....Jill

I'm in a mobile home, with natural gas water heater, furnace and stove. I also had a Central HVAC. Which, this year, bit the dust. So I 'survived' on two AC elec. window units for the summer.
But, now, I'm facing heat for winter...
I LOVE cooking on 'real' fire, and not elect. However, natural gas has gone sky high.
WTF am I going to do? Change Water Heater to elec? THEN buy a new HVAC unit?
I'm already 'ahead of the game' by, when I moved in, bought a 'Clothes Processor' that, truly, takes in dirty clothes and then, dries them--same load. Yep. ONE machine, no venting, wired to 110. LOVE this machine. I'm into LESS, LESS, LESS...
Should I bite the bullet and go all Elec?

Last year's heating season the monthly budget plan was $150/month. That was for heat, hot water, stove and clothes drier in the house plus heat for the shop. At the end of the season I owed an extra $350.
This season we are looking at $200/month for the same thing. We'll see how it works out next summer.
25 years ago, when we bought the place (no shop) the monthly bill was around $55.
But 25 years ago we weren't making the "mega bux" we are now!!
