Here's a story on the price of fuel!

Took my daughter Vicki down to the Gold Coast (2 hour drive) to pick up the camper van (mobile home) she just brought last week.

On the way home we pulled into a truck stop to top up for the trip back. The van took diesel and the only pumps were those big suckers the use for trucks.

Vicky inserted the hose in her tank and pulled the trigger. Bingo! $100 worth in the blink of an eye. She just about fainted. Lucky Dad was carring some spare cash!

In the 60's & 70's chances of finding an exploitable oilwell was 25-30%. Todays's technology increases that probability to 92%.

The Desoto Canyon area has drilled wells in excess of 30000 ft in 8500 ft of water.

The recent find in the Gulf of Mexico south of New Orleans may increase the US oil reserves by 50%.

Unocal stopped producing oil from platforms 5-8 miles of the coast in the Santa Barbara Channel, because they got tired of lawsuits from little old ladies that were bothered by the lights from the platforms ruining their view from their oceanfront condominiums.

When American oil company's paid(vast sums) Saudi's king for the first rights to drill for oil. He took as much as he could carry on his camel and rode into the desert.

Almost every major oil spill in recent history is not the fault of the oil industry, but the trasportion industry that transports both crude and refined products.

The Japanese have created a pressure/temperature process that would produce .0003 of an ounce of petroleum product from 1lb of manure. How much bullcrap is that to fill your tank, and where are you going to locate a plant capable of producing a million barrels/day?

Same deal with the farm land, How much good farmland will have to be used to construct the entohnal plants. Now get this, they have just concluded that that food grade alcohol can be made from the ethanol. Imaginge that food grade alcohol from corn!!!

I don't know much about this gas price topic. I paided 2.23 this morning for a 10% ethanol blend.

The Japanese system could fill the entire US needs if they set up their plant in Washington.

Having said that no MAJOR oil producing fields (ones that produce in excess of 500,000 barrels per day) have been discovered since 1970

I feel oil even at today's prices is undervalued and it's unlikely we will ever see cheaper energy in our lifetimes than we see today.

Here, have a chilling read...

Mike,

You read the most depressing stuff. Reminds me of "The Population Bomb" by Paul R. Ehrlich. We all know how accurate that turned out. [Wink]

Miles,
I wouldn't compare the cost of one commodity, between two totally different economies, without factoring in everything else.

Another thing Wayne failed to mention is that the taxes included in foreign gasoline prices replaces many of our other taxes.
