I'm worrying again. Is that our job to worry?
Anyway a guy found me who is ready for a van with painted graphics. Yeah! but I usually use Chromatic Bulletin for everything and I am going to be doing some large areas, probably paint masking and possibly some enamel receptive vinyl or handlettering with a fitch(I know I'm too walldoggie for my own good). I was going to use the bulletin and clear with Frog Juice. The client wants the job to really last. The main color is a dark green. Please advise, will my way pass, and would two coats of juice make a difference? And how long do you wait between coats?

Frog juice is sort of lacquer based. Bulletins are sort of enamel based, and in my mind, mixing the two with the lacquer stuff on top is NOT good. I would not do it. I have heard others say mist the stuff of a couple of light coats etc, but I won't do it.

What about oneshot with hardener, or just oneshot alone?

"...a van with painted graphics"

I'd go with the One shot Lettering Enamels. No need to clear it and you'll get better adhesion to the van's surface.

my 2 cents...

Lettering enamel is longer laster than bulletin color which is designed for bulletin boards 1-3 years. This is according to reps from 1 Shot. Skip the frog juice and add the hardener to the 1 Shot. Catalyzed HOK works for painting on vinyl.

Catalyzed automotive clears over HOK or over 1 Shot with a hardener will offer the longest lasting jobs on vehicles.

Ixnay on the UlletinBay.
Stick with Lettering enamels, as these guys suggest.
If you are masking, use a 1" foam brush for bigger stuff as a fitch is too stiff.
You'd do it far better with a pounce pattern, (or to project it) some tape for the straight lines, and some nice quills.

What Bill said.

Bullentin paint is for outdoor billboards, which I bet they don't sell much of that paint anymore! [Smile]

Lettering enamels flow out smoothly, drying time is different and gloss up better than bullentins.

I haven't hand painted a van in ages, and personally I would be a little nervous.

We just had a guy come in for vinyl who had his van lettered by hand and airbrushed...he didn't like it, and made them take it all back off...which wouldn't come off...so they had to repaint his van for him!

Very costly mistake by one of the local "airheads."

If any of you have ever spent time at a sign enamel company you would have seen that some of them but not all of the Bulletin colors had the same formulas as the Lettering enamels. Chromatic did this and at one time I had and still have if I can find it, the colors which have the same formula from chromatic. I know that both Lt. Blue and Emerald Green are not the same and only from my memory, although the Magenta and Purple are.

Now that being said, the difference these days in regards to the Spraylat company which owns both and uses Chromatic for Bulletins and 1-Shot for the Lettering enamels, what we don't know is, are the formulas truly the same less the lead content. These questions stop any experimentation on any real job. Time is precious, so go with what has been said here on the BB [Smile]

I am so glad you posted this, Steve!

I am lettering a large box truck tomorrow. My first paint job on a vehicle for money. I will use vinyl to letter it, but the logo is about 4' high by 6' wide, & the truck has gazillions of rivets.

Already figured on the One Shot with hardener.

I think I better go buy some more foam brushes & tape!

Here in Florida bullentins last about a year before color fads ...fact ... relettered with.. lettering.. still going strong after 6 years fact....
TO REMOVE EASLY use ..Easy Off.. oven cleaner with plastic scruber rince with water wash redo if needed when dry...repainting often not nessary, depends on age of painted surface etc. but alot easier ...THANK YOU & ENJOY LIFE

I do use bulletin enamels on walls quite a bit, but I would not letter a vehicle with them.
They have a thicker feel and a more matte finish.
