In another post, Donna talks about her new Dakota pickup truck. It motivated me to make this post.
Our Son John owns a 2001 Dakota. Cool little truck. Especially when a gearhead like John starts trying to get as much HP as possible out of his toy. Almost 400 HP at this point.
I experienced a proud Papa moment this past weekend.
It was Moparfest Weekend. Many of the Dodge dealers held a car show that featured all things Mopar, both old and new. I have a photo of a nice old Valiant for Joey when I get the chance to post it.
The highlight of the day was a burnout contest. John was entered, so Barb and I were there, along with a thousand or so others, to see him and his Dakota perform.
They started the show off with a brand new Viper. In the process, they destroyed 1400 dollars of rear tires. A handful of other pro racers then demoed what their cars could do before the real competition began.
Then the announcer introduced John Shortreed from Fergus and his 2001 Dakota. I felt my chest start to swell as he roared into position and prepared to do his thing. I was not prepared for what this kid did.
The rules required that he only had 30 seconds to produce as much smoke as possible. As the engine build power, the back wheels broke lose and the smoke began to build.
Smoke completely covered his truck and rose a good 10 stories into the air. The crowd went wild cheering him on. I turned to the people behind me and shouted "That's my boy!"
After 30 seconds, the engine noise died down, but the truck was still hidden in the smoke. Then a big, shaved head boy came out of the smoke and took a bow to the screaming crowd. What a moment!

He made the most smoke, but he didn't win. An old 69 Fury station wagon walked away with first place and the new tires. He's already making plans for next year.

Reminds me of when Bill was a teenager. One Saturday night I had gone to bed. He had been up in the garage tinkering on his Cougar. I awoke to the smell of burning rubber. (I can't hear so I have a good nose) Anyway that damn kid was doing burn-outs with the cougar. I still have scars on my garage floor! Someday after he gets his own garage (preferably with pristine concrete) I am gonna sneak into it and do a BIG burn-out. BTW I always tell Justis that when he gets his own place I plan to peel his wallpaper, draw on his new couch with a Sharpie, and a list of other things that he has done to my place! love....Jill

Steve, You should be proud, and yes, Dan couldn't have put it better: it is silly, but fun. Things our kids do just blow us out of the water. This is cool you got pics, too.
