Just spoke to an Extira supplier yesterday and they said DOW closed the plant . Extira is no more??? I hope that's not true. The stuff can be dusty messy and heavy ...but I have found it a necessary evil once you work out the kinks. It definitely had a place in my shop.

Bruce, Extira is a "wheather resistant" MDF board. Basically it is MDF impregnated w/poly and resins.
It does hold up very well outside. Can be tough to get paint to adhere to it but once you get over that hump it is an inexpensive millable panel alternative.

Extira is produced by CMI and is not affiliated with Dow in anyway. Extira has been available since 2002, has never experienced supply issues and is readily available. The product is offered in 5 thickness and 3 standard panel sizes. Visit www.extira.com for detailed information.

And, it looks like extira is used for artificual boards here, The neighbor is making a deck out of boards that look like extira. They called it extira too. Very interesting what ever it is..

Well now that's why I come here. After further research... discovered that I got some bad information. As Mike articulated DOW has nothing to do with Extira. Extira is alive and well. I hate being the recipient of a bad rumor.
Curtis I doubt that the deck boards are the same Extira. Those are more plastic based lumber made from recycled plastic bags and 2 liter bottles etc. It is becoming a popular alternative to treated lumber except for the expense.
