Reading the wasp sting thread from Joey made me think of this. Last week I was kicked in the side of the knee by a cranky horse- It was a really hard, shocking frightening kick. Moments later he kicked again and got me in the armpit. I know you can make all sorts of comments about that, but that's not the aim of the exercise. I had a job to complete, so just grabbed a hose & sprayed the injured areas with coldish water every 15-20 sceonds for a while. When it was over, I located some ice and put that on the areas, followed by ARNICA cream- that stuff works wonders for swelling reduction and wound relief.
Im really looked like I had three kneecaps after it happened, the swelling was that much. What interested me was that another friend nearby gave me some peppermint essential oils, and I rubbed this on the huge lump. Within about 20 minutes, I could feel it shrinking, and by the next morining the lump was almost invisible!
It is still a bit tender, but I do not limp anymore. Arnica is great for any bruises, and peppermint oil is worth trying too.

Never had to work around horses before but if I had been kicked that hose would have ended up being used in a much different manner. And the horse might have been crankier after that!

Tiger Balm good Stuff too Ian. Try it sometime- great for bruises. I take Karate and bruise easy. Sometimes I look like walking dead- my husband wants me to get a T-Shirt that reads "My husband doesn't beat me! I take Karate" And then he wants me to put on the back- "And I'm obviously not very good at it!"

Stewey, your post made me realize that I could have used a Chinese herb called Dit Da Jow to relieve the pain and swollen part in just a short time as well. When things like this happen, we're always too crazy to think that fast. Dit Da Jow has been used for hundreds of years by martial arts persons for pain and also relieving the swollen parts of your body due to getting hit or hitting. You can actually search google and get a recipe. This stuff works.
Most people's instinct would have been to either 1. give up & go away & seek medical attention for the flesh damage, or 2. clout the horse pretty severely, followed by #1, or 3. seek mental re-evaluation
But I'm not 'most people'!
(It's a bit like the phrase from Cat Steven's Father & Son : "If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them they know , not me...")
I'm just really glad that it was me who copped the double kick, not one of the kids, or one of the public, and that it was beside the knee, not the stomach or groin or head, and that with some great (legal) herbal stuff, plus ice, the flesh damage & pain was minimised incredibly quickly.

Congrats on Reserve Champion for the day. Must be pretty with all those blue and reds hanging around. Those bruises will go away but the ribbons will be there forever. WTG.

Ian, I totally agree about the arnica. When I used to work out at the gym I would get really sore sometimes and I'd use the arnica gel and it would take the pain away so fast it was miraculous. I gave some to a friend that is a personal trainer and she was amazed by it too. BTW, a 2x4 works very well for training an obstinate horse; they seem to understand the language.

"When he wakes up!!!" yes, I slept in all yesterday from exhaustion!
We took 5 clydesdales down to Brisbane for the annual Royal Show, and competed in 7 classes, against 63 others clydies. We ended up with 5 seconds, 2 firsts & a reserve champion stallion- all with horses we bred. The kids enjoy the experience too, camping in the stables & taking time off to go out & work out where the free samples are, which showbags are the best value, etc.
I had the honour of being the clydesdale Judge at Sydney Royal this year, too, back at Easter time.
Ricky, next time, try peppermint oil also- I reckon it helped or accelerated the arnica's properties.

Dude, you got kicked (twice) by a clydesdale??? Geeez, that's like getting hit with a high-velocity 55 gal drum! Congrats on the ribbons Ian; that is quite an accomplishment and some very beautiful, incredible animals. I'll definately keep the peppermint in mind for the next boo boo.

Ian, Been there - done it. in 1994 my daughter and I did 21 horse shows from May until Oct...lots of camping in the truck or stalls. As far as the swelling, we had an Ag exchange students from Australia quite a few years ago and she gave us all a gift. Mine was a bottle of Eucalypus oil. That stuff does wonders. I can't get it as thick here as what she gave me, but I use it whenever I need to poltice myself or in place of firing a horse.
