OP, one thing I do is have multiple email addresses. I have one that I do lots of my business emailing on, which I never ever ever never under any circumstances never ever post anywhere where it can get g00gled or register it at any websites. It stays pretty clean.

I have an email address that gets SOME spam that I use for a lot of things, registering at legitimate business sites when I purchase something, listing on websites for contact, etc. On that one, I select the spam, and block the senders most of the time, and it only gets a moderate amount. (5 or 6 a day)

Then I have an address that I use for all the other registrations (news articles, driver downloads, etc.) This one gets about 100 or more spams every day... I just go in every week or two and "select all" and "delete."

Whatever you do, don't ever try to "Unsubscribe" or send them a nasty reply... chances are they will not get your email (came from a hijacked account) but if they do, it just confirmed to them there is someone on your end that opened the email, and jacks you up a notch on the spam list.

Hey, it may not be the best or most efficient solution, but's it's how I deal with it, and it's been working for a couple of years....

A couple of things I forgot to add... my ISP actually has a spam filter that I can go to my account and set to "Really Strict" mode. It'll block most anything that even remotely looks like spam... however it works a little too good and sometimes blocks emails I need.

The other thing is.. most webmail and email programs have where you can set allow and block lists, only allowing people from specific servers or addresses to email you. I email back and forth too much, and have friends with multiple email accounts, so that would be a MPITA for me...

David Fisher had a good thread about an "email munger" a year or so ago.

Alternately, OP, on your profile here, alter your email address to read something like
"pit b at bell south dot com without the spaces",
so it won't look like an email address that a trawler can snavel.

I'm sick of them too!
And I do have 2 email addies.
Both are getting these stock ones that just have a jpg.
And the cialis/viagra ones where they spell it weird so you can't block it by typing that into your message rules part.
Some of them have the most stupid titles too!
I just hit "block sender" but it is still so annoying to be getting 20 of them a day.
love....Jill

I wish I only received 20 [Mad]

I usually receive 50 to 70 a day. Very aggravating. I really can't believe these emails are very effective for these idiots. [Confused]

Exactly what Jon said...I have 7 email addresses, all for specific purposes. One of them is the ONLY one I will ever use when a site asks for an email address. The one I mostly get spam on is my father's...I kept it after he died to continue to sell his prints. God knows what he did but I get all the Nigerian junk, etc there.

OP, sometimes the only way to get rid of it all is to start fresh. I know it's a PITA but my one email got so bad I just canned it and made up a new one.

My mail server has pretty good control over spam plus I can custsomize the settings on the server itself, but some still get through because you can't lock it down too tightly otherwise I'd be out of business. I already miss a good amount of business email because of spam controls. The spam that makes it through gets bounced right back to the sender using the "Bounce" tool in the Mail program that comes with OSX. Basically, it spoofs a mail server response that the email address does not exist. If the spam system is automated, their system will remove the bad address from the list.

Still, it doesn't stop them.

Every once in a while I'll do like Kimberly - I'll remove all the email accounts from my server and create new ones. It can be a pain getting everyone (friends, family) updated though.

set you email filters to deny every thing except those with a specific code in the subject line.
such as "sign shop" or some other word you associate with your bizz.

Anything without that word in your subject line goes straight to the trash bin.

Make sure everyone you get email from gets your code word.

I did this with several email addy's a while ago. I quickly discovered which entity gave out my email address.

Same with my FAX number, I assigned a different 'send to' person to anyone who requested my FAX. I found out who was giving out my FAX number (a supplier) and quickly let them know how much I resented it..

I run my own email server through bluehost.com, and it allows me to enable spam controls. So far it works pretty good. It doesn't delete any of the mail, but it tags it with a line that says it might be spam. In Outlook Express I set my email filter to look for that line of text. Anything that has that line gets directed to the trash automatically. I still get some spam in my Inbox, but it's much more tolerable.

I use Secure IE instead of just the regular IE. And do an Ad-Aware personal check every day. Last month when I took the puter in to get more RAM they did 8 different "scans" on it. The results weren't too bad. I had 49 possibly bad files on it which were deleted. I asked how many they usually get after that thorough of a check and they said usually between 10,000 & 30,000. So I was pretty happy with that. I may get 15 or 20 SPAMs a week. I think the Secure IE really helps. But I really don't do a whole lot of off work surfing, so there are really only a few sites that I go to. This one- Clipart.com- and links I get from here. As soon as I am finished with a surf I AdAware immediately. And I take out even suspicous files. It's a matter of being vigilent.

Norton's antivirus traps about 95% of mine. The rest go into a folder that you can empty. I get no less the 50 a day. With Norton I can see what was blocked and add what was not spam to an acceptable list with a right mouse click. Spam that was not caught, right click and block future
mail.

How many times have I said this? Report them to SpamCop. Use MailBlock. They're free. Visit CAUCE and see more tricks. After a little effort at the front end, years ago, I very, very rarely get a spam. Last month I think one got thru, or maybe it was the previous month. Whatever, it went straight to SpamCop. Does this work only for me and nobody else?

I'm not sure why, but my Outlook program filters them pretty well. Most of them go directly to my Junk email folder. The occasional stray one that gets through, I right-click and select "add to blocked sender's list. I probably get around 20 or more a day and only one or two end up in my inbox.
