Is anybody having problems with employees spending too much time on myspace.com? I've talked to two friends who are firing employees because they can't keep them off the site, one of the employees went as far as disabling the software that was blocking access to it.
I keep hearing from business people that it's becoming a huge problem but people using it don't see it that way because it's only 4 or 5 minutes at a time....just several times an hour, all day long.
So, anybody seeing this problem developing or am I just old for thinking this?

The whole internet thing is becoming problematic for most employers. As a computer junkie who gets paid to mess around on the web all day, I can't imagine not being able to get online while at work but if I were an employer, I'd be annoyed by it.
Here's the way I would look at it, on your breaks - no problem at all. During work, maybe 5 minutes if there was NOTHING going on.
The bottom line is you have to have a clear cut policy right from the get-go.
If someone went so far as to disable the software that was blocking the site - they'd be out the door that very same day. I'm assuming if the software was blocked that that employee was already aware that it was not to be accessed from your workplace.

Is it anything like posting on here all day? Even though I learn a lot from this forum and I get a lot of inspiration from this site, I've gotten in trouble for chatting on here... so is it really any difference? I'm guessing the peole that are getting in trouble for it are stuck on the computer ALL day ( which can get a bit monotonous). I don't see a problem with it as long as your work is done. There are groups on MySpace that are devoted to art and design and you can get a lot of good feedback there as well. I guess it depends on what you are using MySpace for.
That's my rant for the day.

My daughter is on myspace and I've always thought of it as a "teenager" thing. Hmmm... I do have a bit of a problem checking this blog every so often. It's a bit addicting. Of course, I get all my work done and more...
I will admit though, I minimize the screen when anyone walks by. It's kinda funny working in a sign shop and being afraid someone will catch you on a sign forum.

The site may be lame but unlike the the zillions of other sites this one just got sold by it's creators for $580 MILLION Dollars. Somebody obviously sees some worth there.

Joe I just invited you to be my friend on there. Yep, got a myspace account too; I'm "prospector101"
I fired the best employee I have ever had a few years ago because I could not leave his sight without him getting on the net. The same with my son but he's still my son; I've just learned to live with it. I don't, however, tolerate it with employees. And of course, when I point my finger at someone else there are always 3 pointing back at me.

The liberal side of me says, as long as the work is getting done, it doesn't matter.
Now, disabling software that block access to some sites? That's grounds for termination, although the computer SHOULD have been setup with a USER account with that level of access stripped. It sounds like your system is logging in as an admin by default and that's never good.
That's one of the great things about OSX. You can block any user's access to any program on the system, even block any website you want or allow access to any, and there's no way for a user to disable it because it's handled via permissions in the operating system, not a 3rd party software package.
In the end, I couldn't get mad at employees for wasting time online because I'm the biggest offender. Even though the work gets done, I couldn't expect anyone to adhere to a no-access policy when I certainly don't.
When I worked at the engineering firm, they had keyloggers and tracking software on the workstations. They not only tracked what sites you visited, but *anything* you typed as well. They didn't mind if people went online, they just had a strict policy against viewing streaming videos (tie up the network) and pRonography. They did enforce it too, one of the guys got canned for looking at pRon. (Yes I mispelled it intentionally)

If they're spending time on the internet to research sign related stuff or making themselves a better signmaker, I'd let them - with a certain amount of regulation.
If they're goofing off, that's not what they're getting paid for. Work is for work.
