Lately and more frequently I'm being supplied eps files that I can't read. (from multiple clients) In corel 10 I can bring in the thumbnail as eps (bitmap) but get "invalid file format" as a ps. Same files give me a warning that I need a newer version when using AI 10. They raster great in PS7 ... which doesn't help me cut vinyl.(Omega 2.25) My guess is they are being created in Illustrator CS.
Looks like it's time to upgrade.
I am much more comfortable in Corel than Illustrator ... price difference is a minor factor too.
How well does Corel X3 handle the AI-CS files?

X3 shouldn't have a problem opening Illustrator files. I use Illustrator CS1 at work, and my boss uses CorelDraw X3. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he can open my files. However, I have CS2 at home, and have to save my files to CS1 if I want to use them at work. I would be interested in knowing if there is a compatibility problem between X3 and CS2
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

I just checked and CorelDraw will export AI-CS/2 so I have to assume it will import that format as well.

Yeah Mark....X3 has improved much in opening present-day file formats. In fact, it even opens PSD (PhotoShop) files as good as it opens it's cousin's files, Illustrator. Recently, I've been working in PhotoShop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 due to my recent clients who work in these programs and because of it, I had to engage myself in these programs as a sign artist. Especially now improved versions of Adobe Illustrator can take a bit map and convert it into vector type files and run through 'Live Trace' for solid color fills. I must admit, though X3 will do this (bitmap to vector), yet I prefer Illustrator's bitmap conversion module. But anyways,.....so much for all the geek stuff.... both programs are great in what they have to offer. And as time goes on as I started as a sign painter, I'm begining to appreciate the benefits of the technology as it enhances signmaking.
If all possible, check out SignCraft's article (May/June 06) with Mike Jackson. He shows how he utilizes programs such as PhotoShop/Illustrator/Gerber Omega to produce some stunning effects for signmaking. As you may know Mike is a super veteran of the sign trade, in my estimate, and goes back since the seventies. I've always enjoyed and benefited from his timely articles during my start up years till now. I think he is one of a few who's making that transition into present day tecnological applications.
My take and hope this (some how?) ....helps )
