Not necessarily looking to change my logo, but since everyone seemed to have fun with Blake's post I thought I'de put mine up for everyone to brake down. I just like seeing the places people can take this. Everyone has a different opinion and I like seeing the variations in taste.
Have fun...

I like the overall look of the design. Letter spacing and contrast....the small line is hard to read and the Dum Designs would have a lot more punch with a dark letter color and no shadow or a light colored one. The letter spacing is already pretty tight and the shadow makes it worse... Maybe make the letter panel larger and let the ovals go behind it without the border. JMHO

Kelsey, I really like this logo. It's different. It is smart looking and puts me in mind if high class or higher end modern design.
I hate to admit though that the name made me laugh at first glance. Forgive me because I don't want to sound like the insensitive jerk that's making fun of your last name because I'm sure you have heard it all.
I wouldn't have said anything but thought about what I would think if I was just scrolling through the phonebook or driving down the street and saw this ad. Most people won't know that Dum is your last name so the immediate impression may ...well...
KD Designs may be better.
Really just trying to help.

Kelsey, I like the idea you have. Following from Bill's idea, maybe your tag line could be "without the B" !

I would have used primary colors blending into each other for the brush oval streaks. Also, for what it's worth, the bristles could stand a little more curve in the direction of those paint streaks and I would do away with the very outter boarder. Kind of restricts that flowing effect going with the oval brush strokes. The oval brush strokes will boarder the entire design as is.
I think this is a real sophisticated logo and tells alot of the quality you put into your sign work.

Kelsey I gotta admit, I too had the reaction that Bill did , when first seeing your name. Being in a commercial sign shop, dealing with contractors and shop owners, who's wives or nephews are "designers" I happen to see alot of 'Dumb designs' after seeing some of your work I realize..... Dum aint dumb. I don't think a John Deaton cartoon would be appropriate for this one.

Hi Kelsey, Lots of great suggestions here. I like what you have there but I find the back panel is way too large and overpowers everything. It's a neat idea with the brushes and the paint strokes!
I'd like to see your name enlarged about 500%! It needs to be much larger. Maybe you could just have your name in the panel and what you do below it to fill up that bottom space abit more. I'd stack the lettering so it fits better.
The main copy color (your name) needs more contrast, when it's the same as the background that's where it sits and doesn't want to come to the foreground. You could make the panel a dark color to help it out. I like Glenn's idea of having some color with the paint. It needs abit of warmth added, it looks a little cold with those blues.
Here's a version I whipped up just for fun.

Nice idea Stevo. I think, Kelsey, if I were you, that I'd take your brush idea (which is nice) and use the 3 primary colors on it as Glenn suggested. Red, Yellow, Blue. Then use it as an background element like Stevo did, with your name much bigger over it. I even like Ian's tagline. It's YOUR name, be proud of it. love....Jill

In my minds eye, they are always appropriate Ken. Just how I look at the world. Sorta Dan Sawatzkyish, yknow.
And Kelsey, you have a cool looking design there. I would use another typestyle though. That one doesnt seem to work with the graphic you have.

I'm with John in that I believe there is the occasional sign where a cartoon is definitely not appropriate, but it isn't often.
The world is much too serious a place in my view and I'm doing all I possibly can to fix that.... one sign at a time.

Jon, I love your cartoon. I had thought of using a toon, but my stuff can be a little dark or wierd (kind of like Roth's work) and didn't want to pinpoint my business to that area.
Really busy around here so give me a few days and we'll see what I can come up with...

Kelsey, The curve at the bottom of your design looks like a smile, along with the grouping of the brush handles looking like a nose. I like it, It progects a POSITIVE image. Great! Now add some color!

Here's a couple more...I may just take it a different direction. I don't really have time right now though...like the plumber that never gets to fixing his own pipes.
Sorrey the pics are so big. I thought they were smaller.
