At the prices, they should letter all by themselves. I just got a bill for two quills, a #1 and #3 and they were $35 for the two of them. They should stand up and dance for that.
Of course I haven't bought any in a while, so maybe I just haven't kept up with the times. Is petroleum used in making brushes?

Ok so I may speak of the past but there were several persons who imported brushes made to their specifications and one of them was Steve Berman before he sold his Chromatic. On the market today persons like Robert Nouis and Steve Kafka have given new specifications to brush manufacturers here and abroard to make swords and stripers and it can be only a matter of time till for one or more signpainters to do the same.
I really don't believe that hand painted signage is on its way out although I do believe that some signage is not worth painting by hand. I guess its all in what kind of clientelyou actually deal with. jeff Crank recently sold his vinyl end of his business and is strickly doing paint making more then he has in years.
Back to the brushes, A.S. Handover Ltd. made in England as Monte explains makes excellent brushes which are still great. When are our Letterville suppliers going to follow the lead of some stripers and actually have brushes made either in this country or over-seas to our specs. Brush shedding in American companies is a problem these days for whatever reason but can be a thing of the past for entrepreneurs looking to actually keeping this craft alive

$35 isn't much for a good brush, I've spent way more than that for a good brush, still have em, as good brushes seem to last longer than cheap ones, go figure.....

I've had the same problem with design programs in the past Russ. For the price of CorelDraw, Illustrator etc, you think they would make nicer designs. Oh well, my more recent models seem to be producing better designs all the time. I have noticed that the Mac computers seem to spit out some really nice designs......what's with that. Hmmmmnnnn......then again I have seen some sweet work from a PC too. I'm going to have to think on this.
