He would like Gold and Silver Leaf for his Consulting Company he and his son are starting..(Flag 2 is fluttering as he can't explain what they consult about) Ok Send me a email with the logo and I'll get you a price.. Heres today Email (Flag 3 Diver DOWN and Drowned.)

Ouch. That is like a Mr. Potato Head with all the pieces in the wrong place. The flat text on a curved banner is nice, but my favorite design element is the small black appendage at the bottom. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 3129 | From: Tooele, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

I agonise over designs and layout..and I suck at it compared to almost everyone that posts here....
BUT...
THAT is just plain BAD..Even my very first "design" outranks that effort.
It isn't often that I offer comments on design, but I feel confident I could improve on something like that!!!!

I would have nicely said " I think it didn't go throught right. The lettering is off center. And I quess the arc in the work Cenntenial didn't come throught. And I don't think that the colors didn't come out right as well. I'm gonna send you a redo of what maybe it was supposed to look like and you tell me if I got it right. And if he says he like the first version better, than I 'd do just wahts he wants.

Looks like the software lost it alignment somewhere.. I saw this before when soomeone used printshop or something. It looks like the yellow panel was supposed to sit on the mantle piece..
I can hardly beleive that even an amature would do it like that..

When it looks weird like this, I request a PDF file so I can see what the image should actually look like. There are some variations and font switcheroos that occur sometimes. Let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt.

Not the last, but the second last time I was 'diplomatic' like that to a customer, and offered honest sincere & desperately needed fixes (with polite explanations) I lost the job to someone else who just did what was requested. I see the result occasionally- It's shocking, hard to read, inconsistant elements, bad balance, dreadful colours...they just ignored me & went on with it. I pity the business.
(The background was hot pink & maroon, the lettering was yellow, brown & white, wiht some red & green. The shadows were some on the left, some on the right, some offset, some surround, and some were a shadow past an outline, and some weren't.)

I'd do a quick layout for a design that is easy to carve and price it normally. Then I would triple the price on their design. Let the price difference help them decide.
If they go with the ugly design, you can explain that some of the design features are impossible to carve and you will have to make a few changes.

If it were me, I would have an alternative ready for him to look at on Monday. Nothing fancy, but something to show another viewpoint. I would also try to find out what he is trying to achieve, and I would explain why his design isn't making the grade. If he still insists on that design, I would look around and say, "Am I on Candid Camera?"

I got $7.95 for that design now quit making fun of my work. It took me 2 minutes to put together so that's $238.50 an hour. How many of you get that much for design sevices?

Well That Meeting went as well as a Fart in Church. The Client Came in and I did a Quick Sketch for him trying to explain to him the basics of a decent design. (God knows I am not a very diplomatic type person though) Well he gets all p issy Ok So be it. Now I'm ready to knock this guy in to next week. But I'm trying to be a professional so I just said I would have to pass on this job. Well I thought he was going to cry or hit me, wasn't sure or which one. But he just stomped out. During all this I finally got out of him what he is a consultant for. ADVERTISING AND MARKETING. I Give up.

Well, at least he's not claiming to be a signmakers consultant.
This kind of reminds me of a project I'm working on now. Customer brought in a package design (which I later found out was designed by his wife) that got ripped to shreds by potential customers at a recent trade show. He said he wanted it "redone" so that it would shine at retail.
Well, after redesigning the package from scratch, the client gets all upset because the initial design wound up in the trash can.
Now I know what the client secretly wanted. They wanted the original design "improved" so they could go back to the customers that said "Your package sucks" and say, "See, now our package is good".
I guess that thought that pigs ear they brought us could be turned into a silk purse.

Oh, so let's see: One guy hasn't got a clue but runs what he calls a Professional Design Agency. The other guy has even less of a clue and runs an Advertising and Marketing Consulting business? Heck, I think I'm going to get myself a white coat and open up a Brain Surgeon clinic. Why waste time learning your profession?
