In conversing with some other heads, it was mentioned that attaching HDU letters to MOD background us not a good idea.
I have some signs out that are built that way, and am in the process of building another. Why is this method discouraged? Is there something I can do to prevent problems? Cause, let's face it, it is a more econamical way to build a strong sign, rather than using thicker HDU and still having a wobble problem anyways.
I've never had an issue, but, I don't want to have to rebuild one either.

i think if you are just attaching letters its ok...however on signfoams website they no longer recommend laminating hdu to mdo as a means to rigidity on larger signs. basically because they expand and contract at different rates. also if the mdo starts to warp it will take the hdu with it. i have epoxied letters to mdo, dibond and metal wood...so far so good.

It depends how you do it, Rick. Latigo has used corregated metal and 4mm Dibond for backing dimensional letters. On the Corregated metal he usually uses a light 1"x1" tube aluminum frame cuz it would fold over otherwise, no? And on Dibond he threads the stud into the pad and then uses a washer and nut on the surface and a washer and locknut on the backside. As long as you use enough studs there's no wobble.

I can't imagine you'd have any problems, Rick, as long as the MDO is framed or supported in a way it can't bow or warp. Using good 2-side MDO is also a good way to guard against warpage.

My only reason for not wanting to use MDO is the HDU letters are going to outlast the MDO by 2 or 3 times. I give a 5 - 7 year life expectancy on 3/4" MDO. 1/2" would be less. I also try to stay away from ALUMILITE, the corogated plastic/aluminum. In winter I could see water freezing and delaminating the material.
4MM Dibond attached to a good metal frame would be the way to go in my opinion. Buy you know what they say about opinions.
