Our artist is going to paint a scene on a sign and would prefer to use acrylics. For simpler scenes she uses One-Shot but this scene is much more complex.

Are acrylics suitable for use on exterior signs?

If not, what would you suggest?

Adrienne Morgan painted a mural on
our dining room walls..
she used the little squeeze bottles
of acrylic and thinned it with water..
the acrylics go a long way when thinned
probably a satin clear coat would be a good
idea

I use eggshell finish latex outside all the time.
with a good primer.
But it needs to cure about 8 hours without moisture getting to it or it can pucker.
latex wall paints tinted with acrylic tube paints and mixed with mediums that are available can work too. like liquitex. Good, compatable primer and drying time matter most.

I would use 1shot. I've done complex "paintings" with it. If you use acrylic artists paints it would need to be sealed.

If its a paintedscene it should be Acrylics from the tubes cuz you can mix them for colors like oil paints and thin them with Acrylic Medium on your Palette. It dries faster and it does stay bright if you get the right paints from an Art Supply.
When we do that we seal the artwork with Glisten PC.

Paul,

I recently did a combination of things on a pictorial painting for an outdoor sign. Mostly I used exterior latex paint. A lot of the colors I mixed myself with Universal Tints. I also used the little craft bottles of ceramcoat to mix colors into the latex. I was paranoid about fading so I cleared it with 1Shot UV clear.

I just sent this out about 1 month ago so I have no idea how the colors will hold up.

My mom has painted many little signs for gifts using the Delta Ceramcoat paints and then clearing with Varathane. They look fine after exterior exposure but some had the clear crack. I attribute that to the fact that Varathane is for indoor use.

Hope that helps!

I paint my window splashes with Acrylic paints from www.dickblick.com I use their private label liquid acrylics in pints. My first layer is blockout white, and then I use pigments over that. Have never sealed the splashes. Many windows look great after long periods of time, the only fading I seem to have is with the reds, and that is after a year or so...
