I have a project coming up that is a concrete wall that is in primer (It had been painted before). I instructed the owner to have it prepped and remove the loose paint ( it measures 16' x4' tall). That said.. here's the question.. would you paint it (base coat)with an oil based enamel,or semi gloss latex, or??? Thanks! oh yea, why would you use to finish that you recommend.

If it were me, I would use oil based paints. Better quality adhesion. But that is just me...perhaps some of the other walldogs have better input on this...?

You should get yourself to Lodi (see Future Live Meets to the left or the topic "Head West Walldogs" above) and get the experience and the expertise from some of the best Walldogs around. AND it's the FIRST Walldog out west IN your state! You will learn everything you need to know there!

You need to know what kind of primer the owner had put on the wall. Generally, I'd use a good acrylic primer; then coat out with oil base enamel. But the existing primer could possibly change things.

In the past few years it seems that quality has gone up in latex paint, and down in oil-base (because of lead-romoval). There have been several threads at Letterville about latex vs oil, which you may be able to look up.

I'd never consider anything but acrylic paints for a concrete wall and I have painted over a hundred good sized murals on them using acrylics exclusively. After 23 years in the business most of them are still there.
Its my understanding that acrylic has the ability to breathe which concrete needs. Oil base paints tend to seal the wall... hence the bistering and flaking.
In Lodi our crew will be using acrylics. Free lessons there. In wiggly line painting too.

painting a concrete wall today...just popped in to check my email, and Barbara sent this post to me...
I wouldstart with a good masonry primer, Benjamin Moore, and finsh with TOP QUALITY latex paint... I use Benjamin Moore 25 year warranty exterior "MoorGlo"... the paint dealers and other house painters always accuse me of buying the most expensive paint, I say, thanks, I know, I create quality designs which I in turn produce, and I expect my work to hold up well and be there for a while, so I can continue to produce more of the same....
Dan is correct, concrete will "breath", moisture underneath will damage oil base paints soon, water base will breath with the surface. When I prepare a wall, I'll pressure wash first, but you must allow the wall to totally dry, either one or two days, Oroville's summer heat, easy overnight.
Come to Lodi, get your first hand experience right here, it's only 12 days from now...
