Went to Lowe's & Home Depot last night trying to find a good, tough parts box to keep in truck for installs - I figured it needs to have at least 40 compartments to cover almost all sign installs - i.e., 4 or 5 different masonry anchors, hooks, eyebolts, various sizes & lengths of stainless steel screws, washers, nuts, etc. . . I wasn't happy wid any of the plastic boxes they had - I expect them to git rough use - any suggestions? I've been using a couple of Magnum Plano fishing tackle boxes which have held up surprisingly well (the hard tan/orange ones - 26 compartments) considering I just throw 'em around in the truck box wid sledgehammers & paint cans & such - I wonder if Sears Craftsman or Snap-On carries good hardware boxes ?

I have a bunch of these & love them. I don't make up a install kit for the road, but if I needed small compartments like this, I'd store a few of them in a milk crate. The crate could take a beating, but these can not.
for the shop, I just got one of these:
...I love my milk crates too... but for the ones that are full of 20 or 30 little things... these will be much better!

Carl I have the exact same delima. Closest thing I saw (metal) was at a store called Northern tool.I don't know if it's a chain.
I havn't really applied my mind toward making one myself, but as I'm typing this, the other part of my mind is saying:"Use Doug's idea, but make a simple metal box, and use a plastic box inside of it".
I suppose this could be accomplished two ways: one, by using sheet metal and a brake, to bend the pieces to the right shape, or, in lieu of a brake, use small angle iron to make a frame, to which sheet metal is attached. Remember, even a small wire feed welder can seriously distort the sheet metal because of the heat, so maybe some rivets are in order.

Try Harbor Freight, I bought one from them. It has the plastic containers like the one above and the metal shelving also. It is not as large as the one above but you can't beat the price. I'm not sure if there is a Harbor Freight in Memphis, Tn. but there is one in Shreveport, LA., so I would think there is one near you in Memphis.

if you can find one.. Flat file system as parts storage cabinet. You can store a TON of stuff in those much more efficient. when you pull the drawer you can see exactly whats there instantly. No need to pull the box out to look. you would be amazed at how much you can store like that. Or, get a used file cabinet and start with that to test.
An example of what im refering too. Not necessarily this one but something like it..

Carl, Check out the Portable Rally Toolboxes at Sears. They are metal, open on top and have 2-4 drawers. Plastic organizing trays are available for the drawers.
