I have always been fascinated by album cover art - someplace I have a really great book on it. I have been trying to figure out what to put on a large blank white wall in our family room and it dawned on me yesterday that framed album covers would be PERFECT.
This brings me to my question...if you were going to frame and display a stack of album covers, which would you use? I was fairly surprised at the ones that I chose. They didn't represent my favorite albums per se but were the most visually stunning. There were also many that I liked but didn't want a particular color showcased up there.
So far, my choices are: ELO - A New World Record Simon & Garfunkle - Bookends Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run Bruce Springsteen - Greetings from Asbury Park Eagles - Hotel California Jackson Browne - Saturate Before Using Jackson Browne - Running on Empty Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elton John - Captain Fantastic Godspell - Soundtrack Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky Earth Wind & Fire - All in All Boston - Boston Police - Ghost in the Machine
I'm sure that I will be swapping them in and out until I get a perfect layout. I have at least 2000 albums so choice is not a problem!
So, which albums would you choose to display based upon their graphics (as opposed to the music itself) ?

I just ordered some 14" x 14" matte black album cover frames. All of the other ones I've seen had a tiny 1/4" frame - these look nice.

James, I loved Fly like an eagle by Steve Miller - I used to have a 4' x 4' foamcore poster of it in my room! (My dad's friend owned a record store and used to get them for me.)
Kelsey - I was going to use Rush's 2112 but had to narrow down the pile!

The album covers for Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons that were done by Hypnosis are all very interesting. I find the photography on Alan Parson's "Eve" especially compelling. It shows two beautiful girls with veils over their faces but when you look closely you see they actually have these nasty sores that aren't so easily seen. A striking visual metaphor.
I'm also very fond of the design work that Peter Saville did for New Order and Orchestral Manuevers in the Dark. The New Order disk for "Blue Monday" that looked like an old floppy disk is a real classic.
Of course, Roger Dean was like a God to me when I was younger and his work for Yes and Uriah Heep are superb.

Roger Dean might have been the first person I considered an artist. His style was unique and imaginative. Bought all the "Yes" albums as a result.
Cool album covers... Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" The logo for "Boston" "Sgt Pepper" had plenty to look for...sorta the Where's Waldo of it's day. "Derringer Live"...always thought it captured his essence in black & white perfectly....he just rocked! "Point of Know Return" - Kansas "Draw The Line" - Al Hirschfeld drawing of Aerosmith "Welcome to my Nightmare" - Alice Cooper "Big Bambu" - Cheech and Chong (The giant rolling paper inside...lol) "1984" - Van Halen

Kimberly, How about Chicago? They have many cool designs using their famous logo in different materials. 5th album was carved into wood, 10th was a chocolate bar partially unwrapped, 8th was the logo in green with a red cardinal behind it which was an embroidered patch, and their first greatest hits had the members of the band painting their logo on the side of an apartment building! It looks like a tennant is cutting their scaffolding support rope and they are about to fall. It just so happens that today they released their 30th album (cd) which is the logo done in marble and a guy using a jackhammer cutting into concrete to form three X's. They just happen to be my favorite band. I painted a 5' wide Chicago logo on my home office wall which I'm sure some other album covers could easily be projected and painted on your wall. Bigger is better and makes a giant graphic statement!
Have fun with your selections. You could add behind your covers some musical bars and notes to tie the album covers together. Just a thought.
Sign-cerely, Steve

Thanks for the reminder Steve! I love Chicago and did pull out the one with the painter guys on it but for some reason it wasn't striking enough - I'll scour ebay and see if I can find the chocolate car one - that would be great.
