I have a customer that wants me to screenprint 50 hardhats. It is only words on the front, back and both sides. All 4 different sayings. All in black.
Would vinyl be an option for this. I really don't want to screen print them.
If vinyl is an option, Is High performance ok?
Anything I should be fore warned about? What would you charge?
Thanks for all your help.

No you can't screen them without a special contour screen and jig. Vinyl is an option but most hard hats have serious plasticizer issues that make it hard to adhere to. Gerber's Permagrip will adhere to them but it is white and would have to be printed black on the edge or by screen first. Also, I would recommend "flame treating" the hard hats before applying any vinyl to them. That's done with a propane torch by lightly going over the area on an angle quickly. You will see a slight blush happening on the front edge of the flame.
That alone will increase the adhesion of the vinyl and maybe your black high performance will work fine. Get one to test, before and after.

Rhonda I have to agree with Bill. Hard hats are tricky to get vinyl to stick to. I have never tried an actual flame in treating them, but have heated them with my heat gun before and then after installing the vinyl with pretty good results.
I will try using a flame.
Vinyl will almost curl off on its own without any treatment.
PS: I also cleaned it with Rapid Tac

Try cleaning FIRST with Rapid Prep, then follow with cleaning of Rapid Tac or TacII, this will remove oil residues, and sort of lock the surfase, then the Rapid Tac or TacII sets the stage for a strong bond application.
If you believe this is not effective then please, lets hear why?

I had a big crack in my windshield from where a rock flew up and hit it. I rubbed a little Rapid Remover on it and in less than 30 seconds it was gone! I had a customer that wanted "4 Feet" and "6 Feet" in vinyl letters on the bottom of his pool. It was filled with water so I removed the paper backing, sprayed the vinyl with Rapid Tac, dove to the bottom, sprayed the concrete with Rapid Prep and stuck it down. I had to come back up for a breath or two then I dove back down, squeegied it down and the tape peeled right off. It was amazing!

Last year I was approached with a similar job. The hard hats were made of polypropelene plastic, very common these days, and I know from experience painting race car parts that OS Paints and vinyl don't always stick well to them. Once the customer sent their artwork, an EXTERMELY detailed one color design, I backed down on it, not because it couldn't be done, but because I wasn't equipped to do it properly. It had to be silkscreened or I'd have been days weeding it.
Do a little digging online. There are companies who screen hardhats with a wide variety of capabilities.
Hope this helps... Rapid
