I'm gonna have to test drive an HHR for myself. Curtis says they are stout yet all the road tests I've read on them have 1/4 mile times in the high 16's low 17's.....hmmmmm.
As far as cars being based on such and such platform, take that with a grain of salt. Most times what they are talking about is the basic running gear/subframe. We have a Cruiser, my stepdaughter has a Neon. I've looked under both cars and there aren't too many similarities at all. Same goes for the small Caddy SUV/station wagon. It's based on a S-10 frame ( there ya go OP ) as is the Hummer 3, but when you look at them, there's not a lot of S-10 to look at.

Good info George.....There's some neat features to be liked in the HHR.....I'm not sold on the looks...but to each his/her own.
There have been lots of times I have wished I went into auto design for a profession. I really believe that with the right "CAD/3D" training, I could come up with some really neat stuff....at least a lot more imaginative than what you see *out there.*
On the other hand, I'm not so naive as to think the bean counters and unimaginative, scared comittees don't have a major influence on toning down an otherwise good automotive design into what *they think* people want......

iam a volvo man....and up untill FORD bought em, they was great cars....i wont buy a newer one, is a FORD...KEY STATEMENT....UP UNTILL FORD BOUGHT THEM...this is what they consider older models.....since FORD took over. which was 98-99 i think. i have a 75 164E, 84 242, and the wifes 95 850.......all VOLVOS.volvos reputation for being a safe car was made WITH THE 140-164-240 body style cars. also most of the cars that wear 100k-500k badges are OLD 1800 CC-2.3 CC models. 140 series volvos are from 68-78, 240 series are from 79-93. these are the REAL VOLVOS. volvo came out with the 740-760 worst piece of junk ever made....and they used a v-6 motor from RENAULT(now there is a piece of junk)big mistake on volvos part. the 95 we have is VOLVO MADE and its engine is a copy of the AUDI/VOLKSWAGON 5 cyl front drive engine which is one the most advanced motors in europe. as for working on a volvo, in sweden most of the people their UNDERSTAND HOW TO FIX A VOLVO, and they are almost like the old ford model t in its simplicty to the swedes. once you dig into em, they arent any harder to fix then a 350 chevy! i been workin on em since we bought a 1970 144, in 1982 and have had nothing but VOLVOS since then of one model or another. the olny other car we have had since was 1973 280C mercedes(own one and you will not be happy with anything less)and volvo is as close as you can get as for ride and handling. now you want a car that is a pain and expensive to work on....BMW is at the top of that list!!!! like i said before SUB-COMPACT platforms, specailly those from GM....or subsidery of them...NONE HAVE LASTED or are good for any lenght of time. most of these are considered "throw-away" cars. drive em 100k, and crush em. as for comsumers report....take some of that with a grain of salt too.

The HHR shares a platform with Chevrolet's Cobalt. Its no race car. But it will run after you get the engine turing some RPM's What impressed me was how quiet it is inside. Also the car is based on the classic chevy 1949 Suburban.
All those who say it a copy of the PT never looked back further than 1980, are stuck on the misfact that the 90's era mustangs looked good,, and shouldn't even say what this HHR is based upon.

Curtis - great link! Now I understand why the HHR is so ugly - - it's in the genes! The 49' was ugly too and GM stayed pretty true to it' heritage.
We'll just have to disagree on this one.....I mean, I could probably get used to it....but I'd never really feel good about it....personally.
But thanks for the link....that was a fact I was unaware of.

todd...ANY HONDA will outlast ALL GM SUBCOMPACTS...youre talkin 2 different levels here. as for comumer reports..they interview people who never keep a car more then 3 years or over 100k miles. so youre getting partial information. unless youre a wrench turner or piston head most people have no concept of what makes these cars go ZOOM ZOOM so most never see how long a vehicle lasts. been turnin wrenches for 50 years. ivee seen the crap GM can crank out as TOTALLY NEW, GROUND UP VEHILCES. dont compare em with honda,toyota....or volvo or mercedes...aint in the same league. last good compact or sub compact car GM did was the CORVAIR....vega, chevette, caviler, monza, and that crap piece the caddy cimmeron(cavlier) was based on....time will tell how good this new and improved COBALT....will be....but based on past products....iam closer to right then consumers reports.

I'd have to totally agree with your last assessment OP......Honda is a couple grades higher in the subcompact category.
And you're right - GM's subs have usually been crappy....however, there are some bright spots out there. for instance: The Vibe has gotten fairly good reliability reviews.
And certain GM models have had very good reliability.....like the Buick LeSabre, Impala, etc.
And the new Buick Lucerne....is said to be on a quality par with the likes of Lexus, toyota, etc.
Time will tell, but GM seems to be getting a little better - and they have to - or there won't be a GM around in another 15 years.

Persoanlly I thnk both manufacturers come up way too short.
The PT cruiser for me is extremely underpowered, cramped, and useless to letter.
Make it about 40% larger, throw a V-8 in it and give me some sheet metal to put lettering on.
A friend of mine came over today with one to letter, I got in it and needed a shoe horn just to get my lanky butt out of it. they are beautiful cars don't get me wrong, and I wouldn't mind one but make the Pt the same size of the Durango and I bet sales will fly.

boro and i agree on something....i feel the same way about the HHR make it a full sized vehicle and you got something to work with. cheveys other screw up is the little p/u with the reclining roof....at least its got POWER... but again to small to good for anything..sorta like the PLYMOUTH PROWLER.. neat car....but useless for anything other then sitting and lookin cool.

For those who think the HHR can't HAUL I post this picture as proof... anything is possible with a little imagination.
I suspect Janis will want me to keep her's a little more stock than this baby.
I found two more which appeal to me as well... Maybe Phoebe & I can talk her into one of these... hmmmmm.
