Saw a lump of earwax on Ebay a while back. Auction got pulled before the last bid came in though. Shudda saved the picture for an icon. Pretty colorful.

My GF is a registered nurse and she's a big believer in it. The "candles" are really just hollow waxed paper tubes. She punced a hole in a foil pie tin and lit the end. It kinda sizzles and pops alot. Can't really say that I noticed any great difference, but she seemed to be having fun, so what the heck????

I got sucked into believing that a few years back. I story was the shape of the candle forms a vacuum in your ear as it burns and draws out all kinds of gunk. I was amazed at the lumps of earwax and tiny flecks of dirt that were in the tube. So amazed in fact, that I put it in a baggy and took it to my doctor to show him how great it was. He made me feel like an idiot, telling me it was absolute "bunk". I was kinda mad at him and though he was being a jerk, I mean, I had the proof right there in the baggie!
I went home and tried it again. This time I held it to the palm of my hand while it burned, instead of in my ear. Waddaya know, my hand must have been full of earwax and dirt, because it looked EXACTLY the same as the one that came out of my ear.
There's one born every minute....guess it was my turn. I never did admit I was wrong to the doctor!

Ear candling or 'ear coning' dates as far back as 2500,BC, and was popular among Egyptians and Chinese, as well as even Incas and Mayans who (allegedley) used them in ceremonies. And Native American Indians supposedley used them 'for therapeutic as well as spiritual reasons'.
Meanwhile, I been goin' to the Dr. about every 3 years and gettin' my ears blown-out with hot water. Dr. says while sprayin' paint and cuttin' grass I should wear earplugs . . .
Anyway . . . not too sure about lightin' somethin' on fire that's inside my ear even if it's a foot to the end of the flame.
The canister the 'candles' were sent in says:
CYLINDER WORKS-Lavender cylinders
(for entertainment only)
Jon . . . mabey you're right . . .

Been doing this on folks for YEARS. The method Ed uses (must be a PA thing) You can't do it alone, and do use a pie pan and tie back your hair. My brother Kevin swears by these things, as he formerly had very bad ear troubles and now can actually hear better. Did this to my ex-hubby & father-in-law; you would not believe the crud that came out of their ears. It really does work if done properly. There is a health food place up the street that offers the service for $15. Love....Jill

You're the 2nd person to mention this, and the paperwork the gift-sender sent along does'nt mention it . . .
Where do ya put that??
Is that to dump the stuff into??
Can't do it alone?? Now you're just feedin' Bushies fantasies! lol
Oh btw, one thing that really bugged me about the web-page I got:
Q:Does ear candling hurt? A:Absolutely not! There is no discomfort. It is a very relaxing and very soothing therapy. Most people nod off to sleep during this treatment"
PS: I still have an open mind about this anyway . . .

You cut a small hole in a tin pie pan and poke the end of the cone thru, like a barrier between your head and the candle. You have to lay down on your side to do it properly. Let the candle/cone burn down till it's about 3". Cut it open afterwards, you might see some nasty earwax inside! Love....Jill

I saw them displayed in the window of a health food store a long time ago. A while later we were visiting a friend (in a different city) and mentioned them to her along with a few derogatory remarks about how silly I thought they were.
Our friend turned out to be a HUGE believer in them. She wanted to prove it to us by having us try it. But it never worked out.
I think I'd rather have Janis blow in my ears. It might not get anything out of my ears, but it generally leads to other interesting (and fun) events. I hear that activity increases one's endorphins which has proven to be VERY good for ones health.

LOL Dan . . .well, when you're ears are impacted and you're deaf, you might not hear her!
Oh I see Jilly, that makes sense!
When my friend was tellin' me about this on the phone, I thought it sounded crazy . . .but then I said to her "So it works like the 'draw' on a chimney?" 'Exactly' she says. The next day I get the candles delivered along with a few web-pages she copied. Anyway . . . just had my ears cleaned out, but the next time they get impacted I might save $70!!
It sure can't be any worse than havin' hot water plunged in there and seein' what come out!! YUK!

You ever tried cleaning them with Hydrogen Peroxide? You just dump in a capfull, wait for the fizzing to slow down then repeat it a couple of times. Takes about ten minutes per ear. The stuff disolves ear wax. When you tilt your head down it will all come out with the peroxide. Sounds a lot more fun to me that sticking something in my head and setting it on fire.
Wait, that's the same thing I say about smoking.

This is new to me, but I'll tell ya what I first thought when I heard of this here "ear candling":
When you are incubating chicken eggs, the way to see if there's progress in the individual eggs is to put a light on one side of them, it's called CANDLING the eggs.
So-o-o-o, I figured this here "ear candling" was a way to see if'n a fellers GOT ANY BRAINS!!

They're not safe. There's been a few who have gotten perforated ear drums from using them.

As one that suffers from previously broken ear drums, twice in one ear; I'm real touchy about my ears, I've never heard of ear-candling, but have used warm olive oil to dislodge ear wax and hydrogen peroxide, the peroxide works the best with the least amount of intrusiveness upon ear canals. Ears are excellent sources of pain, so take care what you do to them, even today, low vibration sounds kill my left ear, hence healthy dislike of loud rap music...what? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! heheh

I've alos heard of using sweet oil, and I have personally used garlic oil in the ear, for ear pain.
ANYWAY . . . MrMC!! The REAL ancient uses of ear candles have been discovered on Bicycle's power outage thread!

Well here's my 2cents worth. . . My wife brought some of these candles home several years ago and I was very skepticle about whether they would work. but they did seem to suck a bunch of stuff out. still I wasn't convinced that it was cleaning my ears or just making it's own crap from the wax on the candle. So we did the same ear over again and guess what there was no stuff in the candle the second time. So it appeared that the first candle sucked all the stuff out. I'm still not convinced but it did seem to do something and my ears did feel better, clearer hearing. There's a health spa in town that offers this service and they swear it is legit.
Like I mentioned this was several years ago, so a few years later I tried it again and got the same results. Maybe it works maybe not but it feels good. BTW the tin pan is to keep you from burning your ear
I have a friend that has a problem with headaches, he has this done every couple of weeks and swears that it keeps him from getting the headaches.

Sheila, I have also been led to beleive that ear candling is a spiritual thing and that the crap coming out is in this vein rather than a physical thing. Personally, I found that spending some time with your partner holding the candles upright for each other was a great thing to do.
Put some nice music on and spend some time with each other. You have to talk to each other, as you can't get away and find something else to do!!
Give it a try, don't shove it right into your ear or you might damage yourself. But other than that I can't see what harm can be done.
That's if you are open to spiritual things. Not everyone is.

I tried it once using a paper-plate. it seemed to draw out wax, but I was very uncomfortable doing this. Every now and then I have my DR. relieve me of excess wax. He takes a small plunger-type device and with one plunge sucks out what appears to be a "cigar-butt". Yeah, it's kinda gross but after that I hear everything!

Well, it's OK y'all 'cause we discovered the REAL purpose of ear candles on Bicycles power outage thread.
Here's how it went down . . . or came out . . . whatever . . .
It was David who said: "Ear candles are good for light"
To which I said:
David!!!
I 'see'!
Doodettah!! Now you know 'what to do'!!
The ancient Egyptians stuck those in their ears as candle holders!!! DUH!! While they hand-lettered hieroglyphics! My God! We just unearthed the real use of ear candles!!
And all this stupid stuff about religious 'ceremonies' and 'therapy'!!
And all along, ear candles were the very practical source of hands-free, 'close & even' lighting for SIGN painters!
I can see you now Dudettah . . .
Mercy . . . I gotta learn to post pics so y'all can see it too . . .
(Which was an inviation for someone to post a pic of Bicycle with candles in his ears . . .)

Sheila - I've heard of it and did it a few times myself. It's pretty cool - seems weird and sounds like a friggin campfire in your head but amazing the wax that comes out - eeewwwww! I do a q-tip a day now and no more wax! Try it and have fun! ps - you're supposed to cut a hole in a paper plate and put the "candle" through that so no burning ashes will land on your face! Also have a cup of water ready then dunk it in there when the candle gets low. Cut her open and see for yo'self what lurks inside!
