The Viking Cup in Camrose Alberta in 98. It's an international junior hockey tournament they have every second year. I went with my dad to go watch some good junior hockey. He bought me a program and on one page there was an autograph. Didn't think much about it, till the announcer came on and said whoever had the autographed program had a chance to shoot for a thousand bux in the first intermission.
I got down to the ice they give me a stick and I had to shoot from the FAR blue line into a puck sized hole in the middle of the net. I shoveled the puck and sure enough I made it! I'm the only one to ever do it. I was the local celebrity that day and even talked to Neil Broten about it after. I still get recognized in Camrose. The thousand bux though is long gone.

I just discovered this the other day by way of a Google search for something totally unrelated.
Back in the mid 1950's, my uncle (father's brother) was in the Navy stationed in the Antarctic to build the now McMurdo station. It was called "Operation Deep Freeze 3"
While he was there, the Navy Geological dept named a mountain in Antarctica after him.
Mount Kaschak stands at 5,100 ft in Antarctica.
Yay!

I raced sprint cars with the California Racing Association(CRA) from 1978 through 1990 when Ascot speedway closed. I had varied results in those years that I raced, but I guess my "15 minutes" would be a spectacular crash I had in '90 that earned some footage on a local sports show on channel 4 called "Rogans Heroes" hosted by Fred Rogan. I was uninjured in the crash but the car wasn't-it was transformed into instant junk. This crash lives on as it also is on a video made by Dick Wallen's Racing Classics called "Sprint Car Thrills Volume 2".

Well mine is more like 45 seconds when you add them up. First pic is an unofficial Guiness world record (2) point 118 way skydive that I participated in. I was also in an official South American large formation (80)way record skydive in Barcelona Venezuella.
This second pic is of me and Tom Weisskoff where I placed in an ameteur long driving contest. Note I had never played golf before except for the putt putt courses. This little contest I was paid $1,000.00 and could have won $6k if I had taken first place. I was nineteen years old at the time of that photo.
And the third photo is my first time offshore sportfishing where within the first half hour of dropping the line I hooked up with this 536 lb. giant bluefin tuna. We were back at the dock before noon and sold the fish for $1,500.00
I was also lucky enough to get picked at the Ringling Brother Circus training grounds to fly on the trapeeze 40' up in the air. The photos I have aren't really that good so I'm not posting them.
Oh and I was on channel 13 here in Florida when they thought my new company was worthy of a special feature. I was interviewed by the local hot chick reporter and we did a lot of flirting back and forth. I was going to ask her out till I found out she was married. I hear she did get divorced so maybe I'll chat her up

Bob, saw coverage of those jumps, seems to me that there was a huge problem getting all those ppl. aligned to make circle, didn't it take a couple of tries before they actually set record? Memory seems to indicate that to be so, no wonder, looks easy, but most forget you are traveling at maximum volocity, and all spread apart as not all will fit in one plane, had to use multiple birds. Pic is cool....

I wouldn't call this a claim to fame but when I was almost 16, I was in Hawaii with my family. My dad paid for surfing lessons for the whole 10 days that we were there. I knew then that my instructor Rabbit Kekai, had been a world champion but didn't think too much about that when we were out surfing.
The best time with him was on time when I lost my surf board and he picked me up on his, put me on his shoulders whileand then hung 10. My mom started shooting it on her super 8 only to have the film run out. So at the very end of the reel you can just barely make out him picking me up.
A year or so ago, I was watching a program on surfing legends and there he was being interviewed. That was cool.
Here is Rabbit with my dad in 1967.

My neighbor, a production manager at a local news station...needed some cheap actors for an Auto Owners Insurance commercial.
He asked if I'd help him out and I said sure. So the film crew came over and they filmed me pushing a mower in my front yard, with my boy and his in the driveway shooting hoops.
Then, this lady that worked at Auto Owners pulls up in her car, and I dutifully stop the mower and approach the car and say, "Hi honey, how did the grocery shopping go? Let me help you with those bags."
And then we unload the groceries out of the car....
That commercial aired about 7 or 8 years ago....and they still play it nationally...in select markets.
I've had business associates and friends from different states call me and say, "hey, did I see you in an Auto Owners commercial?"
Kinda funny. And if anyone says acting is easy...it ain't. You can tell by the delivery of my lines......hehehehehe.
******
Also....snuck onto a live set on the streets in Toronto during a "DOC" tv series filming for a Christmas episode.
I walked along with a bunch of extras along the sidewalk to film a little Christmas "filler" scene.
When we got to the end of the walk....the gal directing the shot was reviewing the footage...while the rest of us huddled around watching it.
She turns around and looks at me quizzically and asks, "Are you supposed to be with these people?"
I said, "Yep, uh-huh." And she says, "Oh. Alright." When she turned around I skidaddled across the street. Not sure if it made the cut or not though.

I've had more than my share of fame over the years in regards to the work we have done.
I remember one time when our kids were small I had just done a mural and did the various interviews and such in all the local media. As we were leaving town to go home they happened to play one on the radio station we were tuned to.
The kids were intregued and so we turned it up so they could hear. Bec in particular took notice and was awe struck... and exclaimed to me... dad, you're FAMOUS! It made us smile.
We had a long discussion on the merits of being 'famous'. We didcussed how it really didn't change much but was necessary for a numberr of reasons. It helped us get more work in the future and increased the fees I could reasonably ask for.
I have a filing cabinet FULL of clippings from various newspapers and publications which have carried stories over the years. To this day I'm not exactly sure what they are good for. But they are there just the same just in case I think of a good use for them.
I still get a kick out of having our work featured in publications and being awarded honors.... and still am trying for another cover on SignCraft of course.

Well, mine was an anonymous moment of fame. While walking to class at sign school (Butera) in Boston one morning I heard a cat's plaintive meow while passing by the Public Gardens (that's where the famous swan boats are). I looked up and saw a cat at the very top of a very tall tree (60ft maybe more). A parks employee was looking at it also and told me it had been up there a least a few days. I decided to try to get it. I put down my sign kit, and started to climb. I got all the way up but couldn't reach the critter which was way out on a skinny branch. I went back down to where a few more folks had gathered and talked to a more parks workers and decided to try to get him down with a pole and a crew below with a tarp to catch him. Back up again. By the time I got up top again there was a good crowd gathering, then a cop, then a news truck stopped and started filming the rescue. Well I was successful in dislodging the cat which plopped into the waiting tarp and immediately bolted to parts unknown. The crowd clapped and cheered. By the time I got back down most everyone was gone, except the parks workers and a fellow Butera student who had my sign kit. That night there I was on the 6 oclock news an indiscriminate anonymous silouette in the top of the tree. They did get a good shot of the cat frantically flailing as it fell into the tarp.
But I agree, Bob wins, having stepped out of a perfectly good airplane a few times myself I greatly admire the skill and courage it takes to perform a feat like that.
Well, I been in the paper a coupl'a times . . . and I was on the local news for an entire two seconds while doin' a mural at Em's school . . . the mural got a whole 30 seconds . . .
I AM a bit of a celebrity about town in sign biz . . . I mean . . . if you count people who happen to 'run into' me when they see me out and run over beggin' for my name and number . . . because they (allegedley) 'can't get a hold'a me'-left messages' etc, etc, etc . . .
lol
gee Bob . . . pretty cool pics.
What you did to get in the pics is not too bad either . . .

I have had fun during my 20's playing music in a show band for 7 years. We met a lot of famous people while preforming at state fairs, fund raising concerts and holiday shows. I have been interviewed on local TV and radio stations and traveled all over the midwest.
After I quit traveling, I played with some guys from St. Louis who had this girl lead singer. They said she was pretty good and that I'd like her voice. The girl turned out to be Sheryl Crow.
Of course she went on to LA and I chose to settle down and raise a family. I still wonder about the decisions we make through life. I have no regrets.

I did some graphics on a Magic Powerboat that made the cover of an issue of Powerboat Magazine. The day I put the graphics on the boat was also Sept. 11, they had to cancel the photoshoot because all aircraft (they shoot with helis) were grounded. It never led to any additional work though.

I actually had a couple small claims to fame.
I won first prize in a poster contest in elementary school. My poster and blue ribbon were on display in an Eaton's window downtown. I remember it feeling surreal to see my work up there.
I also landed in The Province's Smile of the Day many years ago. I actually had some strangers stop me on the street saying, "That's her!" LOL!!!
And this one is sort of funny because it was in error. I had a company call me for a quotation. I was in the office when someone commented, "Are YOU Graphic Impact?!?" "Yes..." "WOA, IT'S GRAPHIC IMPACT!!!" and they really meant it. I know they were thinking of someone else because they then said, "You did all those highway signs!" which I didn't. Man, what it takes to be a star these days...
In 2003 I won the Valvoline Cup National Championship. It included ALL motorcycle racers in the US from motocross, flattrack, drag, roadracing, etc.
That same year I also won the AMA National Championship for Lightweight Superbike. They say my name is on the wall at the AMA Museum.

I guess my biggest moment was one just recently. A local business journal did an article on me. It was a great story, and I got a lot of calls from clients and long-lost friends, picked up a lot of clients because of it. I am one to keep my nose to the grindstone. This made me take a moment to look back and say - yeah, I did that.

Its strange how things can jog a person's memory. I hadn't thought about Rabbit in years. Since adding to this post about learning to surf with Rabbit, I googled to see if I would come up with anything. Boy was I surprised who he was/is. He was and still is a legend and was just voted into the SIMA Hall of Fame. I then proceeded to send an email and this same picture to a website about Rabbit Kekai. I heard back from Rabbit's nephew. It seems he is still alive and surfing at 85.
"Celebrity Encounters During his more than 40 years as a beachboy, Rabbit came in contact with a number of well-known people. Asked for any "interesting encounters with celebrities over the years," Rabbit replied:
"Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas, Red Skelton, William Bendix. I worked in a lot of the movies that were filmed in Waikiki. Gidget Goes Hawaiian. The Old Man and the Sea. Mr. Roberts. From Here To Eternity. Hawaii. Diamond Head. All the ones that came down here, everyone got in ‘em. I made good money. Georgie was ****ed at me because he was handling all the extras and getting ten percent of their pay, but he couldn’t get any of mine. Working on the movie Blue Hawaii, I got in a beef with Elvis. I could handle myself with him, no problem, but I went to the director and told him hey, I’m out of here."
Other noted celebrities included Redd Foxx, Dorothy Lamour, Deborah Kerr, Michael Douglas, David Niven and Gary Cooper. Gary Cooper enjoyed Rabbit’s company so much, he wanted to take him to dinner with his family to one of O‘ahu’s fanciest restaurants. "I told him I couldn’t go because they had a dress code and I didn’t have clothes for that place," Rabbit remembers. That didn’t stop Cooper, who outfitted Rabbit with appropriate attire in order to make the occasion.
When the owners of the Dodgers baseball team – the O’Malleys -- put their championship team up at the Royal Hawaiian for an off season break, Rabbit got a chance to meet a number of famous ball players all at once. He took both Sandy Koufax and Drysdale out in an outrigger that pearled on a First Break swell, pitching the canoe over their heads and fill with water. "I made a quick move and bring the nose up and got it all the way back to shore. But when I asked ‘em if they wanted to go out for one more they both jumped out and said, ‘No way.’ It was pretty hairy," Rabbit admitted with a laugh. "They’d never forget that day. They had a ball surfing though. I took ‘em surfing on my big Hobie tandem board and got ‘em all standing up. We had so much fun that year."
ps. That picture with my dad was taken on my little Poliroid Swinger. Except for some fading on Rabbit's chest, it still looks pretty good.
