My wife just got done cutting my hair, she does a good job. In the upper right corner of a paper I had, I made a quick sketch, "the hair cutting babe" Took all of four minutes. Then I remembered something that happened 13 or more years ago. I think about it now and then, thought I'd tell you before I forget.

I was invited to a backyard party for some freinds. His daughter had just gotten engaged, and if I recall, that's what the party was for. As a contribution to the party, I splashed the sliding glass patio doors, with the couple's name, while the party was going. The guy throwing the party was black, we went to the same church. Everyone knew him as the saxaphone player at the church, he might have broke out the instrument that day and belted out a few licks, I don't remember. What I do remember was how riotous it was when he took the microphone and did an absolutely flawless rendition of a very white DJ. Upon asking him later, he said that was his previous job at a radio station.

So anyway, with all this going on, there was some entertainment. And I keep wondering if a splash artist could cater upscale parties. Dress nice, ham it up, have portable easels (sp?). Maybe the bigger sign for the corporate sort of thing: XYZ Corp Wishes You A Happy New Year, 2007! And smaller panels for Tom & Lisa, etc. Charge big hourly rate plus travel time, I'm game.

Of course, some might find this degrading, I don't know, but I could have fun with it. And certainly would need to brush up on the spelling! [Eek!]

35 years ago, I went to a employee christmas party that had a local artist doing drawings as entertainment.

I've been hired for parties- the last one was a blast! About 40 people, who would decide what each other would get painted on aprons, it was too funny. I slung a lot of airbrush paint that night, but it was a great entertaining party.

James - You might think differently if you didn't know the people. Might not be as fun then. I live around a lot of richie rich people that painting a sign for them is a pain just think of painting a sign for them with 20+ of them hanging over your shoulder. I'll stick to the safety of my shop. I wish you all the luck.

Jim,
It sounds like a great idea. It's something unique and entertaining that I think the "well to do" would spend money on.
But, how do you market it? I can't see spending tons of money to display your services at wedding shows or advertising in the bridal books. So, what about marketing to bridal shops or banquet facilities? Let them sell for you and you'll give them a comission? Just a thought.

Havin' fun,

Checkers

Checkers, I was thinking the same thing.

Jake, I do like being around people ....SOMETIMES. It's like if I can GO there, it gives me some control over the situation, then at the appointed time, you pack up and 'split the scene man' (I am REALLY gettin' old). I heard a Christian psycologist on the radio a few years back. He was going through the usual 'psycobable' about how "we all need to be connected, the last thing you want to say to yourself is: People are where my problems come from, so I'm going to avoid people"

Bing! the light went on! Who SAYS I can't think that?!? That is the most succinct(sp?) thing I've heard in a long time! Thank you mister radio minister guy, I am now more focused.

No really, I can get along with all sorts of people, just don't rely on lame worn out cliches or logical falacies to try and prove a point, it drives me up a wall.

Next question is: how to dress? Buy a used tux, and try not to get paint on it?

Or dayglo jumpsuit, bizzarre sunglasses, and a badge that says "Doctor Neon"???

We hired an artist for my Daughters wedding reception. Everyone got a sketch made. It was a great hit, and cheaper than a photographer.

I was hired as a face-painter for a yuppie-type kid's birthday bash. Made about $50 as I recall and that was about 15 years ago.
I dressed real "chic" for the time (I think I wore black satin MC Hammer pants! hahahaha)
Funny....it never caught on.
Maybe it was the pants?
Love.....Jill
