Has medication ever had an effect on your talent, the way you think and how well you can paint? It seems to have with me. Just wondering. CJ

Kiddin', I went through a spell when I tweeked my back a few years back and they had me on all kinds of crap. Muscle relaxers, steriods, you name it. I noticed a big difference in my eyesight after lettering all day. (was working for a theme park, so I was slinging the bruch 12hrs a day) by lunch I just could not focus worth a crap. After I got off all the goodies it kinda fixed itself, but it did mess with me for a while. Again, whatcha takin. If its any kind of a "relaxer" it kind softends ya. And any kind of Anti- depres stuff will take your "creativity" and smoke it for lunch.

Not me, but I did see a good friend have some prescription medicine really mess with him. I forget what he was taking but I do remember it was for a medical problem. He was talking all wierd and depressed and this just wasn't him. We talked awhile, I asked if he was taking any medication. Turns out he was. I told him to call his doctor and have it changed. He did and he went back to being normal.

Perkins, how on earth did you get a normal friend?
CJ, If medications can change the way you think to try to fix ADD, I'd definately think other medications could screw up normal thought processes. Also, if some can impair your judgement & warn you not to operate heavy equipment, I'd certainly think they could also affect your hand-eye co-ordination as well.

My ex was on sooooo many prescription meds for nearly everything under the sun. The more he took, the more bad symptoms he got, hence the more he had to take.
He's finally off nearly everything and he looks and (nearly LOL) acts normal again.
What a mess it was for him. I'm a firm believer in, if they make you feel worse, get it changed or do without if safe!

I had some trouble with the VA over Citalopram...it's supposed to be a seritonin inhibitor or something to that effect...they gave me this plus a drug called pramapexal(sp)...it messes with dopamine.
At any rate, I got very anxious, so I called the doc and he suggested I stop the prama...drug. Then after about a month I noticed I couldn't concentrate, and was acting like I had Alzheimers or something. I was literally walking in circles at times, and couldn't remember what I was doing. Needless to say, my creativity took a dive during that time.
I stopped taking them all, and now feel much better.
The VA is great, and I take heart medications they prescribe faithfully, but I think you need to watch out for the neurology dept. They were supposed to be trying to find out why I was having involuntary muscle twitching all the time, and when they couldn't come to any diagnosis, they put me on these other drugs mentioned above.
I think their theory was, if they can't figure out what's wrong, then they give you feel-good drugs so you just quit caring about the problem. When they started messing with my brain chemicals,I think they overstepped their bounds, because they really had no firm diagnosis to go on.
I don't know if this helps your case or not CJ...maybe Miss Susan can comment...btw..isn't this Don's new gal? Hi there Susan !

It's only a med if you require a certain dose at even intervals............I think.
I am "supposed" to be on meds for seziures. After trying several versions I gave up after two years. The side effects far outweighed the benefits. The type I have are not so bad so long as I take care of myself. They don't interfere with my life the way the meds do, and I can always start them again if things get worse.
I wasn't able to think clearly, my short term memory was so far gone - I could't even count to ten with confidence. I was useless. My doctor knows I'm not medicated - he even threatened to take my drivers license. But he didn't.
If you are having problems with meds, it's not a good idea just to quit. I would never recommend that to anyone. Ask the doctor if there are other versions of the medication you can try. Whatever you do, be sure your doctor knows.

Besides high blood pressure and high colestrial, this past summer I came down polatromic rumatory arthritis (spelling) three meds for the later are naproxen........prednisone....... and hydroxychloroquinesul.. and I can really relate to what Jeff was going through. Especially if I'm even a little tired. But I seem tired all the time. Thanx for all the responces...

Sometimes, Ed, the side effects of some meds are as bad, or worse than the problem they are supposed to help.
Statins, a class of drugs for high cholesterol, can really knock one down---fatigue, aches and pains, etc. Sometimes, several have to be tried to get one that works without the side effects.
Naproxen---that one is for pain.
Prednisone---an anti-inflammatory, most likely to calm down inflamed joints from the arthritis. One big side effect--and I hope your MD told you about this---is swelling in the face. Harmless, but if not warned, scary.
The other drug has a trade name of Plaquenil. It is also for treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis. "The book" says a visual test should be done before starting it, and every so often while taking it. If no improvement in arthritis symptoms after 6 to 9 months, it should be discontinued.
Hope this helps.

CJ, my sister had to be hospitalized due to side effects from Prednisone. It caused a condition that was horrible and embarrassing for her, sort of a psychological breakdown. My brother must take this drug due to ulcerative colitis, and he has the puffy cheeks, and also severe depression from the drug. Try to get off of it if you can!!! Love.....Jill

Going back to your original question CJ, the prednisone could certainly mess with your thinking a bit, especially if you're on a high dose like 60mg per day or something. It's a great drug for arthritis and such, but the lowest possible dose that keeps the swelling and pain down for ya is the best. I've been on and off of prednisone for over 20 years myself (am on a small daily dose now).
Speaking of being tired all the time, have the docs tested you for Lupus?

I dont' trust any prescribed drugs. Its only street drugs for me. I've used them all and enjoy them. They have helped me grow intellectually and spiritually, not in the religious sense. But then I would never recommend my way of thinking to most people. I think the majority of drug abusers should not be using. You have to have a very strong sense of self if your going to experiment with chemicals. Not for the faint of heart....
