To all our Letterhead Brothers and Sisters, Update on Renata Guzman
January 19, 2006, Renata & I went into the hospital to receive her Stereotactic surgery for the lesions that had caused her seizure Nov. 8.
**To help you understand, the following is a concise explanation of Stereotactic surgery that is much clearer than if I try to describe it. Stereotactic surgery is a minimally-invasive form of surgical intervention which makes use of a three-dimensional coordinates system to locate small targets inside the body and to perform on them some action such as ablation (removal), biopsy, lesion, injection, stimulation, implantation, etc. "Stereotactic" in Greek (another accepted spelling is "stereotaxic") means movement in space. In theory, any organ system inside the body can be subjected to stereotactic surgery. Difficulties in setting up a reliable frame of reference (such as bony landmarks which bear a constant spatial relation to soft tissues), however, mean that its applications have been limited to brain surgery. Besides the brain, biopsy and surgery of the breasts have also been attempted.
The results of Renata’s surgery was very positive. Dr. Ingenito, Radiation Oncologist and Dr. Rajaraman, Neurosurgeon was very pleased with the procedure results.
They reported to us that the lesions were much smaller than originally anticipated. The results of the January 19th, contrast CT scan were in fact mere millimeters in size (about 1 tenth of a inch).
This was an amazingly long day. We got into the hospital at 5:00am in the morning and were released at 8:45 pm that evening. The surgical staff took two pre surgery photos, so if we can, for all you sci-fi curious types, we will try to share the slightly Hannibal Lechter visual of the headgear.
The next day Renata was in full force, energetic and lovely as ever, even though steroids and anti seizure meds are part of the drug regiment for a while again.
We will go back in three weeks for another follow-up CT scan check up.
The power of prayer is never to be underestimated and the marvels of medical science are amazing.
We couldn’t have done it without you, our brothers and sisters with your heartfelt prayers, unending support & positive energies all aimed in our direction.
During the actual procedure, the surgical staff asked Renata if she wanted to listen to music during the one and half hour process. She said thank you, but she said she would be talking to God and all the wonderful friends and supporters she knew were with her at that moment if only separated by distance.
God Bless you all for the power you lent this journey and continue to do so daily.
