It has been tough for me to not say anything as I have been under contract with Corel on testing the new CoreldrawX3 Graphics Suite. I have been on them for so many years about the contour tool with all the nodes and the trace. Both have been fixed and many more have been added. Take a look and download the trial. The New Power trace is worth the upgrade!.

Enjoy any questions send me a e-mail as I am using it .

Hiya Doug,
And thanks for the tip, but I'm not holding my breath yet.
I downloaded and installed it, but I think I'm having problems already. As soon as I launch the Draw application, I get a pop-up asking me to select my Just-in-time debugger. Since I know nothing about scripts or debugging, I cancelled the pop-up, but it keeps coming back.
I'll try to reinstall it and I'll give an update later.

Havin' fun,

That may be the problem Doug. Thanks! It was one of the first things I changed. I opened the tab again and it seems to be fine.
I'm using XP Media Center on a 3.2 ghz PC with 512 megs of ram.
Also, do you have any idea what information is is communicating with Corel? I normally block all design applications from accessing the web.

Hey Doug I tried to run some of your banner material through my Roland and had a serious head crash from the grommets. What are you guys doing to prevent that? I checked for clearance before hand? Turned into an expensive repair.

We downloaded the trial version and I told Jane -- "let's get that sucker!"

Joe's saying "That's cool every 5 minutes." The contour fix had me sold.

I'm downloading the trial version now but are the base features and look still the same as version 12 or has everything changed again requiring relearning where all the current tools are?

Amy,

I did the install with 10 on my ststem...not a problem. It creates as a seperate set of applications and doesn't overwrite the existing applications...which is a cool way to do comaprisons between the two.

The firt best improvement is the trace program. Interactive within Coreldraw, the controls far superior to any previous versions and the preview window is a plus! FINALLY!!!

I also like the quick page color changer on the Photopaint pallette...much easir to deal with than before.

Most upgrades are chock full of bells and whistles, but this one's gotten down to brass tacks and given us some REAL tools to better do our work with. Best version to date.

I've had versions 1,3,4,7,9 & 12. Going from 4 to 7 was a huge leap and big learning curve. I'll never wait so long to update again. I figure for a couple hundred bucks (not even a buck a day) you might as well have the latest and greatest. This one looks pretty slick from the trial we downloaded. So I had the thing next day aired. Can't wait.......

You know how many versions of Corel you can update to for the price of some of these other sign making programs? To me if you're a pc-er it doesn't make sense to not get the program.

So far so good. Nothing major in the way of changing tool functions but rather nice enhancements to the existing tools. I'll keep playing with it.

Looks like there are some useful improvements. I did the lynda.com tutorials on it last night. I like the bevel, the filet, miter and chamfer, and the step and dock featutes. They all promise to be time savers.
Lynda.com has sure been a nice way to test drive new programs without committing. It takes a fair amount of time, but you can compare similar programs and make an informed decision. The nicest thing is by the time you get the program you have broken the biggest part of the learning curve.

Kelly,

I agree. I really like Lynda.com. I signed up for 1 month and went through the basic and advanced Corel 12. It's amazing how much i didn't know about Version 12 that i learned in the training. Stuff that's almost impossible to discover by yourself.

Started Corel X3 training last night. I wonder if this is the same as the training CD that comes with X3.

Hopefully they will have and advanced training X3 class before my month at Lynda runs out. If not, i'll renew later. Definitely worth the $25.00!

Just ordered my upgrade from Corel. I can hardly wait...now all of my work will look like Doug Downey!

Another plug here for Lynda.com - easy to understand and always available at the push of a button. And they are constantly updating. Best $25 a month you can spend - even less if you pay by the year.

Well after spending a few hours playing with it, I'm quite liking the improvements. There still seem to be a few hiccups, I've hung the program up three times tonight. Maybe I just need to upgrade my computer.
The bevel feature is still my favorite! I like that you can actually bevel your text and then change the font or text after. Ever since I got Xara X1 a few years ago, I've wished that Corel had picked up on that vector bevel capability.
If you go into the help menu there is a feature where it will highlight the icons/drop down titles of any new features from whatever your current version. It is a quick way to isolate the changes and check them out. I also noticed that both Doug and Vallentin Vassileff (a clipart merchant here) have tutorials listed under the "ask the experts". They are worth taking a peek at.
I think I'm pretty much sold on the upgrade. It looks like there are enough new features and improvements to warrant the expenditure.

in 4 months which is good.

Here is how you disable the debugger

METHOD
- launch Front Page > Tools > Macro > Microsoft Script Editor
- MS Script Editor launches
- Tools > Options > select 'Debugging'
- select the 'JITSettings...' > de-select Enable Attach

RESULT
JIT will no longer attach to CGS apps and you will not be prompted with
debugging dlgs while working within DRAW/PAINT.
CGS will continue to operate without error or further debugging dlgs>>>

I noticed during installation that XP service pack2 is required. The installation program let me install without Service Pack 2. I have been reluctant to install service pack2, what are your thoughts?

Those new features sound great. I'm going to download the trial and play with it this weekend.

Its really great when you can sign on and learn about new things like this. For the 15 or so responding to this thread, there is probably a few hundred checking it out that don't post here. If 50 people purchase even just the upgrade,
corel will make $10,000.00. I really hope they can see the value of this website and choose to support it with advertising.

If it wasn't for the advertisers, this website wouldn't be here. When you order the program, please encourage them to come aboard!

Thanks for the info and the tips Doug. Is that "disabling the debugger" the update thing Karyn is talking about? Mine is driving me crazy too!

I have to wonder why corel doesn't join ranks here with all the users they have on board. The support they would offer would really encourage me to upgrade, much like Doug is providing (for free).

Even if (probably does) corel has their own bb and support online, many of us don't wander off this board much. This place is like a gathering of sorts where you don't have to go much further to get what you're needing for those with limited time frames. Busy people are the best targets of all. Regular corel support would only encourage good will and incentives to purchase and keep updated.

I'm still on version 9. I haven't felt a need to upgrade. I certainly wouldn't have known about it or even cared for that matter if Doug hadn't posted about it.
