I doubt if they pay off in Iron City Stevo! I'll see a lot of that Iron City being downed by fans when I'm at the Arena for the Penguins-Canucks game tonite.

Do they give "extra points" for market research?

I think it's kind of a shady to have these so-called 'contests'. What they ultimately get is a lot of talented people wasting their time, and then they get to 'choose' the winner without paying for all the other work. Hire a company, pay them to do the job, and be done with it. Why have a contest? You can't find a company to actually do the job and pay them what it's worth?
Sorry, but I find these 'contests' insulting. Its like asking people to work on spec. I know I don't work on spec. Like the old 'Oh can you show me what that design might look like, and if I like it, I'll pay you for it."
I guess if you want to do it because you have the time, well that's one thing I guess.
Just my two cents. In my opinion, Stevo, you're way too talented. Helping a fellow letterhead with design tweaks is one instance where I believe is not only helpful, but also honorable. But assisting a company in an exercise like this, well, maybe thats another issue itself.
Am I the only one who thinks so? If so, I'll just go back to my corner and be quiet!!

I can see your point Dan. I spent just over an hour on a design and it's already submitted. I really didn't want to spend too much time on it because it's such a shot in the dark. If I win? Great! I could sure use that 1000bux right about now.

I agree with you too Dan, I never do contest for the same reason. It's basically the same thing that clients do to signshops that provide free design to sell a job. What makes this worse is there is no interaction, no creative brief so you guess at the style, unless you take the website as the basis to design off of. These guys posted thier contest on a few professional design boards and for the most part got ran off or ignored. Designing or tweaking a logo for a fellow letterhead is funner, you have a better idea what is needed and it's sharing in something that is most likely more appreciated and will probably be used.

I am the world's most anguished designer, so I don't contribute much to "design suggestion" posts.
What I do do, when dealing with clients, is spend a lot of time feeling them out to find out what they want or need...then proceed from there.
I see no sense in beating my brains out with off the wall stupid ideas until I have a handle on what the client wants or needs.
And in most cases, for me, the client already has an idea in mind and can give me a sketch of it so I have somewhere to start to make them happy.
Despite what some folks might think..it IS all about the money!!! LOL

I agree with Dan too- BUT... if you can do it with no other colours than red and black (& white), AND no other fonts than helvetica & brush script, THEN it becomes a letterville contest and is quite legit

thums up to dan. alot of talented folks are taking their time to submit a logo for 1000.00. this logo is going to be pretty widespread...i assume. i would do it if i could take on other things like specialty advertising, tshirts and pop signs.
other than that they are just raking in the ideas, screw that!

Joseph Diaz is in there too! Way to go, my son! Here's the whole logo....I'm not sure why they didn't include the legs and the beer.

Jane, when I saw the one that Joe did, I thought - whoever did that one knew what he was doing. :-)
