Wanted: website host & RELIABLE ISP.

Requirements:
Must have RELIABLE nationwide dial-up service
Must have technicians who speak english
Technicans must actually offer some assistance, instead of denying problems exist
Dial-up service must be RELIABLE enough to stay connected long enough to actually send and receive email and load an entire webpage
Email file size restrictions must be bigger than an average Corel file

(the first joker who says AOL gets a stake in the forehead)

P.S. Did I mention they must be RELIABLE???

Chris..

I know that you have no hi-speed availability where you live, other than perhaps satellite. And I suffered with that for sevaral years before it became available.

My problem was crappy phone lines, and the phone lines still are, but the hi-speed DSL works fine on them. (Kinda weird, and I don't understand but it works, so I am happy)

HOWEVER..a couple of weeks ago our DSL went down for some "maintenance" and I tried dialing in to the backup dial-up that my ISP provides...got a speedy 19k hook-up.

So I decided to try the already pre-paid and available "MaGlobe" account I set up to use at Jill's meet...

Guess what? I got 45k on it! Same evening, Same telephone lines, just a diferent ISP.

I mentioned it to the guys at the ISP last week, while I was there doing some sign work.

The response??? "Yeah, well, we've always known that we have a problem with OUR modems, we gotta do something about that one of these days."!!!!!!!!

(BTW, it wasn't a fluke, I disconnected and re-dialed into both ISP's a couple of times...the difference in speed was the same every time.)

I don't know what you are paying for access now, but MaGlobe is pretty cheap for a dial-up connection.

Still wouldn't give up my DSL though! [Wink] [Wink]

We like FutureQuest.net - a bit expensive but support comes in about 5 min. 24/7 and uptime is amazing.

Unbelievable customer service.

Here is the uptime report:

You really don't want to mix your ISP and webhost together. When the ISP has a hiccup, there goes your website!

Hosting I use hostcentric.com and have been using them 6+ years now. I rarely ever have a reason to call them, the site is always up or if I ever see it down it's just a hiccup that clears out after a few minutes. English must be a prerequisite to work there because I've never heard as much as a Texas or Western panhandle Florida accent, much less a foreign one! I'm on an $8.95/month plan that has probably more features on one account than you'd ever need... although I'm getting close to the 300MB limit with literally tens of thousands of photos stored on my server.

Email limit? 25MB for each user mailbox. You can take pretty much any file a customer would send.

I've had my website & ISP the same for years. Found out they are merely re-sellers for dial-up.... and won't let me talk to the real supplier of the dialup. I've had no problem with my hosting, but with this kind of excuses & run around & 'blame anything we can except our service' attitude, I don't want to risk changing it with my website. I'm ready to tell them to go screw themselves (although I'm NOT looking forward to changing my personal email addy & the zillion contacts/registrations I have with it). I regret recommending them to others. I'm embarrassed that I recommended such a ****-poor excuse of a company.

Mike, the mailbox size isn't the issue. Problem I'm running into is most ISP won't let me use my website host server as my outgoing mail server, instead I have to use theirs as outgoing and they have a file size limit so any attachments would have to be smaller than their ridiculous limits.

Chris,

For hosting I've had good luck with both Lowesthosting.com and AMHosting.com. But of course YMMV.

As for dialup, I haven't the slightest clue where to point you. I can't imagine an ISP not allowing you to use your hosting server as your mail sever though. Personally I grab and send my mail through at least four different servers, only one of which is my ISP (Comcast).

Good luck!
Mark

Chris,
As already mentioned I also use Lowesthosting.com for my domain hosting and for my internet I actually use a company called integrity.com They have preexisting filters though so don't know if that is a problem. But I have found they offer a variety of services dsl, dial up (which I use) and the customer service is outstanding.

Kissy,

You can get around that outgoing mail server issue.

Port #25 is the common default port for email so the ISP monitors that port and thus can deny your access to a mail server at an address that's not routed through their system. This way their hardware and bandwidth is not being used to bounce mass mailing and spam off another mail server. I know, my ISP has the same block setup, it's an annoyance to say the least..

... but I have gotten around it! - with help from my webhost provider by the way - they gave me another port number to try.

Set your outgoing mail server to your host provider, then set the port to 587, which is another port for email but the ISP likely is not monitoring it. You might have to find an advanced settings tab depending on your emailer to do this and you might have to open that port in any firewalls you may have running.

I use XO Communications for both and never any problems. And I use my webhosting server for both incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Sorry Kissy, but I didn't even realize you had a website. Where's it at? I agree with with what's been said too. ISP and website hosting should be seperate.

This is who I use. www.tera-byte.com. (edited to add)
