I've heard the phrase "the gilded lily", but I dont think I would like to try one anytime soon.
My variation on the theme is a present for a secret admirer that I seem to have. She is a beautiful gal, and has been leaving me little secret messages in the frost on my truck windows over these last few cold nights we've had recently.
I dont think she knows that I know it is her writing them, or maybe she does, I dont know. But a good friend has confided in me and told me she has a crush on me, so I'm just putting two and two together. This is so like high school, but its actually been fun to find these messages. Makes an old crud like me feel pretty good that a beatiful young lady finds me handsome.
So my idea was to leave a little secret message myself back to her. I wrote her a little poem, to leave where she would find it, but thought thats just not enough. Since her name is Holly, and I have these two large holly trees in the yard just loaded with the colours of the season, I thought a nice little bunch of holly would be appropriate given the season.
Well I cant just bind a few sprigs, that would be too ordinary, and I wanted to do more, something special, and thats where the gilding kit came down off the shelf and on to the workbench.
This has got to be the most difficult gild I've attempted. It's got sharp edges all over the place, and each leaf is in the way of the others, and they flex when you do anything, but that was not going to stop me from trying.
I now have quite a nice little gift for my secret admirer, and I just need to add my poem to it and its good to go. I will print the poem in the tiniest letters a laser printer can print and still be legible with a magnifying glass. I want to keep this fun. I am feeling pretty good these days that such a gorgeous younger lady could see anything in me, and this will be her present for that.
Maybe I wont be spending christmas alone this year, hope this works!

I probably would have cheesed out and just used some gold krylon or summat, of course this month I've been more busy than I've been in about a year (trying to make up for lost time) so I don't have time to do much playing.
Best of luck with the lady

What a cool romantic story. I hope it all works out for you, Tim. The gilded leaves look especially pretty against the natural ones. Love....Jill

Thanks for all the kind comments folks, and even some of the naughty ones! lol
I'm really not sure I'll make anything happen out of this, but I had to do it anyway, just for the extra spring in my step that she has added. And I have no idea where I even found the courage to do it, because I am so extremely shy and naive, that a gal has to pretty much bop me on the head and take me home before I clue in to any romance (wasn't like that in my drinking days, good old liquid courage!). This gift and poem was a very bold move on my part.
On the other side, I have learned that she is only 22 (I thought about 30....ooops!), so I've got 20 years on her, and she currently has a boyfriend, and I'm kinda ugly, so what really are my chance anyways? She probably just likes a guy in uniform, and I'm only feeling proud about myself when I'm wearing my Fire dept uni, the rest of the time, I'm just ho-hum.
I've heard that with 6 billion people on this planet, that there's someone out there for everyone! I guess mine just hasn't found me yet! lol, told you I was bashful! But on its face-value, I feel much better knowing that all hope is not lost for me. I'm simply happy to feel what I feel right now, and maybe this tiny bit of self esteem will grow on me.
Best wishes to all of you, and have a happy holiday!

Tim..I'm glad she is over 16. For those of you who have never met Tim...he maybe shy but he is far from ugly..... Tim, you are a classy, good looking guy with a huge heart, and a great sense of humour...not to mention your gilding talents...Most ladies would be proud to be on your arm. Now go remove that brown paper bag off your face so they can see you......and post your photo here on this Bullboard ....glad to know you, my friend...you are a super guy.

Talk to her, maybe take her for a spin on a fire truck (check with the chief first), or take her around town and show of your artistic side.
