I had discussed a wrap for a Scion, & to meet the clients budget, I agreed to let him get the design done cheaper elsewhere. I got beaten down further on my price, but agreed to that on 2 conditions...

Condition one was that we stayed away from the transitions of side-to-back & side-to-hood so the more difficult "wrapping" issues would be eliminated & we just put graphics on flat areas.

Condition two was that it had to look cool! I already had negotiated to have my signature appear on the job, so the cool factor was critical!

Yesterday I had to give the client some bad news. I saw this drawing 2 weeks ago & held off having that discussion hoping his other friends would tell him first. I finally broke down & told him it just wasn't worth doing... & fortunately he was easily convinced, becuase he really wasn't happy with it either.

I guess I downplayed my design abilities when I admitted I hadn't much experience designing "wraps"... but I told him yesterday it didn't take much specific wrap experience to improve on what he had so far. So I got the design job for an extra $1000.

here was the proposal from the other "designer"

Doug you did your companies reputation a great service by turning down a job that would reflect poorly on you. Good on you for having the balls to say no to a client with no design taste.

You would be surprised at how many jobs I get just by saying no and then showing them why.

I just got my $1600 dep.
I'll bring my designs here for feedback when I have something to show.
I knew I could count on you guys to help me put one last nail in the coffin if the client had any last reservations on paying for a real design... but I didn't need to show him this thread after all [Smile]
(I really had to restrain myself from terms like horrorshow & fugly... but now I can speak with unrestrained disgust about the fugly horrorshow his other "designer" submitted)

Now Doug...

That design isn't all that bad!
Flames and Store name.

All one has to do is turn out some digital graphics for the wheels and hubs that will look like pizza pies!

Wrap the prints to contour of rims or hubs and now you got a Rolling Pizza Oven....

Jill, like could you ask your nephew what the name of that font is and where we can get it?
Seriously, did you see that the layout will fit perfect on a business card.
Is that like really, really cool or what. Like did he have to go to school or something to learn that? Like that is really b****ing, man. Yo!

Scion's are fun! but you're right about it being a pain to have the images wrap onto the roof and hood. We had a little of both on this one with the roof, front and rear.

thanks Bruce, thats inspirational!

Mike... you are the class clown [Smile]
in all honesty, even if the other "designer" made more then me.. I have a goal far more valuable then getting paid on this job. In 4 months of running my large format printer, I've kept it pretty busy, shown many existing clients some cool new capabilities & drawn a few new clients in for work unavailable elsewhere on Maui... but what I haven't yet done (with inkjet output)is a vehicle wrap. I'm looking forward to getting one done that I can be proud of, & point to (as well as print my logo on)

My feelings about this job will not have to be shameful now, but instead can be (hopefully) somewhat boastful.
