Bought a large lot, 31 lettering books. Hidden in amongst the lot was a "Daily's Showcard Writing System" book/magazine. From 1923. Front and back cover missing. 9 3/8 x 12 inches in size. 92 pages not counting front missing front and back covers. Full page ad on page 85 for Bert L. Daily 126 East Third Street, Dayton, Ohio for New Catalog #10 Daily's "Perfect Stroke" Brushes and Supplies
Very heavily illustrated with alphabets, show card layouts and techniques.
Any of you real Sign Writing Guru's able to give me any background on Bert Daily? Google search digs up very little.

Great find Irish! How would you feel about scanning those alphabets, along with anything else we may be interested in, and sharing them here in Letterville?
That brings up a question. At early Letterhead Events, the photocopiers consumed vast amounts of paper. Everyone wanted copies of alphabets and other info in the old books we shared. Were we breaking any copyright laws?

Steve and all, No problem scanning on this end. Don Coplen can probably give us an idea about copyright or anyone else who knows. These would not be sold, just shared for reference, although at high res. Have books collected over the past year related to sign writing that are up to 120 years old. Seems most house painters in the 19th century were also sign writers. I'll scan some sample material out of this particular book tomorrow and email it to you. You can judge if you want to put it up. My idea is to scan those books that are extremely rare and archive them to disc in PDF format. Many will surely be lost to everyone in the not too distant future if they are not somehow preserved in other than musty old paper form.

I can remember Daily Art Supply as far back as 1975, but I never new anything about Bert Daily.
It was a helluva' an art supply house though. They stocked EVERYTHING. Another good one that's still in business today is McAllister's. Stock full line of OS, any kind of brush you could want, etc.

Greg, Thanks for the post. From what I've been able to find out so far, McAllister's was started in 1953 by someone whou once worked at Daily's. Going to try and contact someone at McAllister's and see if they have any useful info.

I agree Irish. If we don't start saving the information from our past, it may just slip away with time. The same goes for the older guys that are fading away. It's important we get out and meet, then document their lives.
Appreciate everything you do Irish.
